Remington vs. Weatherby vs Savage

From a strictly accuracy standpoint, I'd go with the Rem.700, but fit is important, a gun that doesn't fit well seems to recoil more.

I dunno, Weatherby actually backs up claims of accuracy with a guaranty of sub-moa on the new S2 vanguards. And you're dead on about the fit. If the stock don't fit then the rest don't really matter.

fair enough... but better hope he is getting a series 2.. and better hope he likes a monte carlo... etc...

My question is this..... is the difference in accuracy relevant in comparison to action reliability etc?.... everything is relative in a hunting rifle.....

I've never liked the Remingtons all that much, and Vanguard being hinged floor plate makes them unsuitable to my needs. For this reason Ive got the Savage 111 and like it a lot.

Really the answer is buy what fits you best though. Hinged floor plate is a poor choice for me because Im in and out of the truck and unloading it every time you hop back in is a pain.

As long as whatever you pick suits your needs and feels good in your hands you can't really go wrong.

The budget minded hunter has a metric ton of great options nowadays. Hard to go wrong really.

Wow I just took a closer look at that vanguard series 2, never heard of it before this thread. I'm impressed... the option of a detachable magazine, 3 position safety, and the accuracy guarantee, and ellwood epps is offering the blued versions for about $600 while the old sub moa rifles were about $1000. The trigger looks like a big improvement too, it's rare that you see a trigger that can be adjusted below 3.5 pounds from the factory these days.

Looks like weatherby/howa has decided to step up their game, especially in the price department. I can't help feeling like I've been bitten by a bug here.

I can't agree more, i would add the T/C venture to the list, also i would buy a rifle and then a scope not a rifle and scope package, the scopes are useally poor quality.

vanguard is not guaranteed sub moa.... they bench test every rifle and the ones that are sub moa are sold for extra $

I said right in my post I was talking about the S2 with the MOA guarantee...

Good thing I mentioned a laundry list of other items which are superior on the Vanguard to the savage...this includes the one piece machined bolt and solid flat bottom receiver ;)

You can buy DBM models or just buy the Detachable Box Magazine as a seperate ad-on kit.

Sounds like the Vanguard is the way to go. I would like to hold and shoulder each of them first, so I guess that would help first before buying.

I should ad that if you're looking at the Vanguard package, it includes a Bushnell Banner which is an $89 scope. It's not great but it's vastly superior to the Savage included Bushnell Sharpshooter (worth $20) which is really an OEM product made for a couple of manufacturers including tasco. The Vanguard also has Leupold rifleman rings/bases which are superior to the crap on the savage combo.

Like I said, I bought a few savage rifles because I thought I was getting a good value. It turned out to be false economy.

He'll get the S2 if he orders the S2, different product numbers than the old model.

Vanguard S2 would be more reliable than a 700, on extractor and one-piece bolt alone...

Everyone keeps talking about the S2... OP didn't ask about the S2, he asked about 3 rifle and scope packages that are for sale.... the Vanguard in the package is not the S2.... Likewise, the Remington in the package with scope does not have the X-mark adjustable trigger.... it's just a way for these manufacturers and distributors to quickly unload some "outdated" firearms by dressing them up with scopes / slings / hardcases for cheap.....

I`m also in the "what fits you best" camp, i`d also add the TC to the list. I`ve seen some real crappy triggers on the Vangard package rifles, both needed a major cleaning.
