I've been told that I am not allowed to use a 30-06 to hunt coyotes in Simcoe County. Adjala Tosorontio to be more specific. I know that is a lot of gun for coyote. That's not what I am debating.

all I can find is in the hunting regs:

"A person hunting small game may not carry or use a
rif le of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rif le, except a
muzzle-loading gun, in the geograhic areas of of Brant,
Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton,
Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk,
Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo,
Wellington or York."

Thanks in advance for your input.

1- check the municipal discharge bylaws.
2- If discharge checks out, you appear to be in the clear.

A friend of mine in Huron County just took a coyote with a 30-30 win lever action. He happens to be the most ethical, responsible, law-abiding person I know, and doesn't break the law (especially not post it on facebook).

I would suggest you're in the clear.

Due diligence then! Called MNR, refered to township. Called township, could not answer my question. Referenced available material online, no mention of any restriction. Make a note of the names of who you called, what time and at what number you contacted them now.

If there's trouble, you can tell the officer you checked but if he/she has a document that regulates the caliber to be used then he/she should take it up with the township, not you. Here's a copy of the people that I called to make sure I'm in compliance.

Hey... i feel your pain bud.... I am in 65.... I didn't want to buy another rifle just for yotes... I looked into the regs here... turns out i am good but they got back to me so late I had already bought a 223..... but I would wager you will be fine... get some fmj rounds for that 30-06

Thanks everybody. Great advice. FMJ's are a good call. HPs may be a little messy. I'll call them once more and record their names and then go and have some fun. Hopefully pictures to follow.

These guys are aware that a .260remington has the same ballistic as a 300winmag. banning calibres on size alone is a pointless exercise, they should look at the ballistic properties of each calibre.

7.62mm is .30 cal though actual bore and bullet dia. varies for different cartridges under the designation. too big in a .275 area any way. Here in AB we dont have as much braindead ppl in office so we use whatever we got. 220gr. .30-06 makes a mess

Why would anyone make such asinine regulations?

Because it's the densest population corridor in Canada and common sense isnt enough.

Simcoe is part of Norfolk county which is on the list for not using a rifle larger then .275. Honestly people do your research before assuming things and when in doubt call MNR.

Bahaha!

Necropost, foot-in-mouth-post, and first post, all wrapped in one! That’s a grand slam right there!

It's not about caliber size as much as it's about bullet type and weight. .270 bullets are smaller sizes and are "frangibles" meaning if they hit anything other than the intended soft target (ie a branch, clump of dirt etc.) they tend to disintegrate as opposed to a .30 solid-core bullet that can blow through a house. The areas cited in the regs are medium to very high density urban and suburban populated cities and towns. There's still several townships that have "shotguns and .22 rimfire, only" regulations on the books, but, they can be counted on one hand. After The Province of Ontario repealed and re-wrote the old Fish & Game Act replacing it withe The Fish & Wildlife Conservation Act in 1998,most Counties and Regional Municipalities repealed and re-wrote their firearm discharge by-laws to reflect new provisions in the FWCA because of duplication, redundancy and enforcement confusion. There's still a couple of throwback townships in southwestern Ontario and it's still up to hunters to be sure they're in compliance. Those townships have very little hunting activity and have largely excluded themselves from revenue that's invariably generated from hunting. Oh,well, their loss.
