22 Long Rifle at 500 Yards

I shoot to 300 Meters on my range. That is 333 yards and have no problem hitting the gong. I think there is something like 16 ft of drop from a 50 yard zero and 300 meters, but I do not use a holdover. I just zero to 300 meters when I shoot at 300.

What elevation is not a problem with the right setup. Windage is as the 22 lr is very slow with a low ballistic coefficient.

Shooting at this distance is plausible and if there is no wind not even very challenging.
 
I haven't watched the vid....dialup is too slow.

I love my .22's....I use federal champions often. I think it would be a fun day trying to go out to 500. No doubt the bullet can get there...lots of doubt I could put 2 holes touching!
 
I shoot my Dlask 10/22 out to 220m with a 4" group all of the time. that's the limit of our range being hoping to see how far I can go, now I need to find a longer range.

I got interested in long range 22lr a few years ago but then I got side tracked by muzzle devices (see, that's me not listening to you again).

But I'm getting the itch back to play with the new DAR at 200 yards (and beyond if I can find a good location in the bush somewhere). The only thing I don't have yet is a good MOA base. I have to do more research on that.
 
At 280 yards I can hit a 48x48 inch plate almost 100%

Sometimes I only get it 90% of the time, but I figure it's because of the inconsistent bulk rimfire ammo.

Of course this is with a 6-24x scope and a Mark II Savage
 
I certainly don`t think it`s impossible, but wwhat made me wonder about this video, was hearing the gong. I don`t think you`d hear a .22 hit it at 500 yards.
 
You'd hear a tiny ping I think, but you couldn't be wearing headphones and there's have to be no other noise. You can quite easily make out a ting at 300 yards, the problem is when you have those guys who shoot their SKS rifles with tactical gloves on beside you for 4 hours making it impossible to take off your muffs. Haha who am I kidding, I always save a few hundred rounds in case an old guy with a lever gun shows up at the range. "HEY OLD MAN, CHECK OUT MY COMMIE GUN!@#$!!!!@!11"

A lot of people like long range 22LR, because it's fun and interesting.

One thing is for sure, if you are going to work on an MOA base, then it's something I can't wait to see.

I've been saving some old stainless steel pots that will work great for my new "long" range gongs.:D

I'm waiting to hear back from Allen Gun Works to see if they still have any EGW 10/22 20 moa mounts left in stock.

Funny thing is when I was using my Bushnell Rimfire Scope (3-9X) I had enough elevation to shoot from 25-300 yards no problem.

I bought a new scope about a year ago and I only have enough elevation to get me to 200 yards due to scope alignment. The 20 MOA mount should help me out considerably since I should be able to bottom out the elevation adjustment at closer distances.
 
There is always naysayers in the crowd. Last weekend I tried out my 22 Hammerli pistol at 100 yards just for sh*ts and giggles. Using just under a foot of holdover I believe.
I was not about to adjust the sights as a match is coming up pretty soon.
Offhand, one handed, made that 8inch target very nervous with many hits just outside the black and all around it. I know with these iron sights and these old eyes that's about as adventurous as it gets with this pistol & myself.

Edit: If I can do this measure of limited success (yes very limited!) with an iron sighted 22 pistol, I'm sure someone with a great rifle/great ammo/good scope/great skills can do some excellent shooting with thier rifle at distance.

25 MOA Picatinny,
Burris Sig Zee rings,
-5 front +20rear,
Weaver T-36 sighted in @50yards will take you to 300meters with internal elevation.
And you can shoot all winter indoors @ 20 yards all with the same set-up

Thanks for the link. A 40+moa base would be ideal for this game. I just need to stay with a 50 yard zero for "other" uses with this rifle (Mystic has the parts in the mail and pics will be up as soon as they show) For right now a Badger 22moa riser and Zee rings will get me to 500y if I use the mildots. Can get to 300y with just the scope right now.

I will have a good range of EGW bases and parts soon enough. The 10/22 bases are supposed to be coming up in the near future.

HG to 200yds is even more fun. Ruger Mk1 top with a 22/45 bottom. Raise the front sight so the base is even with the top of the rear sight, Kentucky from there. Fed HV bulk ammo. If I can see the rock, I can hit it...

I figure the width of the front sight makes the boulder 1.5 times a milk jug. That is a pretty big object but about what my naked eye can see at 200yds. AND a target you can hit.

Rimfire and silly long distances is far easier then most expect. Remember that bullet is already pretty much subsonic so stability issues are taken care of. If you can aim high enough, the bullet WILL reach some silly far distances.

And it is accessible to ANYONE with a rimfire and some real estate.

Find a area with a patch of loose dirt. Stick a 10' 2X4 into the ground 100yds out (8ft showing) and aim at the top of it. That is your 500yds aiming point more or less.

Very simple to do really.

Just get out there and have some fun and stretch your boundaries.
