Bush rifle

I wanted a light bolt action bush rifle as well so I had a 24" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 30-06 shortened to 20"...

Been loading 165gr & 180gr bullets in it but have now decided to load up with .588 BC 200gr Accubonds @ appr 2450fps - 2500fps...

This combo will be good for anything I will ever encounter here in BC and I would not hesitate to shoot out to 400 yards with it bonus is if I somehow ever screw up and forget the ammo at home I can go to any store that sells ammo and pick up a box or two sight it in and I am good to go...

Mine is a Husqvarna 9.3X57 with the barrel cut and crowned at 20 inches, and a new front sight installed.

Quality rifle, handy, light, accurate, and more than enough power to beyond 200 yd using 270 or 286 gr bullets for any game in this country.

No fuss, no muss, and very little work to get there! :)

Ted

The point of this project is to build (assemble) this rifle my self, any one can go buy a rifle. I am trying to decide on what to chamber this rifle to. NOT TO GO AND BUY A RIFLE, and then pay some one to do the work for me.

Sorry that we have offended you with our suggestions. Call Jerry at Mystic Precision and order a Shilen prefit in 338 Federal for your Savage and be done with it.

Anyone can buy a rifle, this is true. But those same people can assemble a Stevens 200 and a prefit barrel. If it makes you feel proud and good then go ahead. But I've seen Why Not?'s 9.3x57s. They would make me feel prouder and gooder.

Screw on a .338F dude...you wont regret it :)

And not every jackass out there can swap and headspace a barrel, even prefits...you're doing something not a lot of guys can do...hell I know guys that are afraid to adjust their triggers for christ sakes. :)

I would just like to say thanks.

Can you tell me about the 9.3X57 cartridge, and thanks to the person who PMed me and suggested the 444 Marlin. Buy the time I start this project I might be in the loonie bin lol

Was the 9.3x62 mentioned yet??:p I find the Stevens action is pretty smooth, but has no detachable magazine, it's internal. The Savage 111 series has a smooth action and a detachable mag. The Marlin XL-7 action isn't as smooth as the previous mentioned, but has an adjustable trigger, better stock, and better recoil pad from the factory. It has an internal magazine as well.

The 9.3x57 is a fun to shoot 'working' calibre. It packs quite the wallop out to 150 yards or so, where its trajectory takes it out of 'point blank' aiming.

Reasonably priced Privi and Hornady 286gr. bullets are available, Speer 270's too. The Privi RN has a good reputation on game, where as the Hornady SP may be a bit too toughly constructed for reliable full expansion at the 9.3's typical 2000 to 2100'ish MV's. Some testing is in order on that one. Never yet heard the Speer has any problems.

Brass is easy, run the expander through 8x57's, and load 'em up. The Lyman 'M' die has produced straighter necks than using the expander button on the Horn. dies, for me.

I have a M96 and a M98, both from Tradeex. The '96 is the better shooter(pristine bore), Lighter and trimmer too. Both shoot to POA, with a hearty BOOM and enjoyable recoil.

Why is it you and I always think the same when it comes to guns like this? :D As much as wildcats are rare calibers are cool in a bind those guns become hard to feed. Even if you remember your ammo, scope or sight damage causing the need to re-zero your rifle can be a huge problem when you're in the middle of nowhere. I have a strong preference for calibers like 270 and 30-06 just for availability of ammo and components. My latest bush gun is an ultralight Winchester M70 in 270.

Yeah but my 30-06 is the exception my other rifles that I would take are my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with my top loads, my 21" barreled 375RUM or my 20" barreld Puma M92 in 454 Casull and I consider any of my Contenders bush rifles as well due to being so short/light the Contender cartridges I would take are my 308Bellm/375JDJ/45-70...

That said, bearhunter, ... it's a short, light, 10 shot, folding stocked, No4Mk1 .303, with paper patched 165gr .308" Barnes X's @ 2350fps, thats been a constant companion for decades. Fired only the once, in dire need, over 35 years.

I have three 9,3x57's-Husqvarna's I bought from Tradeex-two I put 4x leupold scopes, one came with a Helqvist ghost ring peep sight[the reason I bought the rifle]

I load my own shells[necked up 8x57's] with 286 gr. soft nosed privi partizans over 47 gr of IMR 4064,and that should give me about 2000 fps-and hit like the hammer of Thor, but the recoil is not excessive.I figure that is a pretty good moose load.People say its a ''short range''200 yard rifle-I don't SHOOT beyond 100 yards. For deer I use my 6.5x55 swedes, with factory 139 gr shells and thats proved very effective.Did I mention I like the swedes?
I don't worry about the availability of ammo-I bring a couple of boxes ,and on a hunting trip thats proved to be more that enough-typically you only fire two or three shots anyway, after sighting in

Sounds to me, you've it pegged.
Those Swede's, they know their rifles.
The 6.5x55 especially ... can raise a person's expectations of their own abilities.:D
