i was just taking apart my 1950's savage 99 .308win to clean it, and i noticed that aproximently 8 inches at the end of the barrel is magnetic. its almost strong enough to pick up my screwdriver.
could it effect accuracy or anything?

Damn ... now I have to go check all of mine and see if any have developed any residual magnetization. The curiosity is killing me :D

Ballistically, a magnetic field will not effect copper/brass/lead.

Any marks or dents on the barrel? Maybe it's been hammered a couple times ... that will generate a magnetic field in certain metals.

We magnitized a 6' crowbar wrapping it in copper wire and hooking it up to a 12 volt battery charger just to see if we could. Hitting it with a hammer demagnitized it, so I think that hammering steel breaks the magnetic field.

Actually, hitting it will "cycle" it from magnetized to not, and back again. It is just a very weak amount of magnetism.

I use this method all the time with screwdrivers. Swing the screwdriver at a Vise or Hammer head, and it will usually magnetize it enough to pick up that "lost" screw. Do it again, and it's back to normal and won't collect every minute metal filing on the bench when you lay it down.

as far as i know it has never been around any magnets, elctrical devices , "hammered" exept for fireing it, and it has been fired 2 times facing north though:p

Well live and learn, interesting stuff.

It is very strange. Permanent, meaning non electrical, magnets gradually lose their magnetism. Ordinary iron will magnetize, but it will last only a short time, like hours or days. Better steel, like a rifle barrel would keep it much longer, but I would guess it would be gone in weeks, or at the most, months.
I would have no idea, whatsoever, on your rifle barrel.

None of mine seem to be mabnetized ... really simple question - did you try it with other screwdrivers? Maybe just that screwdriver was magnetized for some reason.

no,i thaught of that so i tested some diferent thins, it did the same thins with screws, nails, steel cased 7.62x39 ammo, car keys, and anything metal. its defantly the barrel.

Weird.
But not as strange as my Norinco M-93, that glows in the dark!
What kind of metal do they make these out of?:D
