Successful Blood Track by my Drahthaar Nos.

Nice story Jay. Good dog. (the neighbours up at our lake have two of them, dumb as stumps but nicest dogs you'll ever meet and man, can they swim!)

And the 'evil black gun' rocks! Send that photo to Greg Farrant. ;)

Recovering this deer for the young hunter is a bonus for him.

Nos just turned 2 last sunday. His birthday present was a goose hunt where me & two buddies limited with 15 geese! The bonus was a male mallard & one retrieve of a goose of OVER 500 meters for Nos! Those pics are in another post here in the Hunting forum... As for training, I now have 3 sandwich bags of blood & half a deer skin to do some blood tracking training with Nos...

Do you have any worries about NOS becoming a "LIVE" deer tracker? ie; chasing deer off leash. Just curious. Great job on the recovery BTW!

Hey Gunnery;

Yes, I do worry about that. But until now, Nos has (to my knowledge) not chased deer. (His brother has... so I know they will... Just that Nos has not...)

When I asked Nos to do the blood tracking, it was under very specific conditions. First & foremost, Nos was on leash from start to finish. Second, there was blood present where the deer was hit initially. So, if I'm thinking correctly, Nos knows deer are now part of the game, just that he is to track blood.

I sure hope that he doesn't get it in his head that it's okay to chase a live deer with NO blood trail... If that happens, I will consult with the breeder & take the appropriate measures. For now, I'm immensly proud of the job Nos did on his first blood track!

I am a FIRM believer in experience! I know Nos pays attention to what I want, so, when I showed him blood & said TRACK, which he had never heard, he started looking & the successful recovery of the deer is the result of opportunity to display his nose & skill and his natuarl abilities. Now that I have 3 bags of blood & a deer skin to leave at the end of a practice track, Nos will have at least 3 more blood trails to follow for good measure...

Nos was bred by George Boyd in Aylesford Nova Scotia (also referred to as Kingston NS) and his kennel name in Vom Dan-Son. George is the breed warden for Canadian Drahthaar's.

Nos is a Dan-Son dog, and I agree, ANY of the Drahthaar breeders in Canada would provide you with a GREAT dog! It's a result of dedication & the German system strictly controling breeding. This IS NOT LIKE the AKC or CKC where any Tom/#### or Harry can breed their dogs & have them registered in the system.

It's great when a dog and owner are on the same page.
Our old Molly that we bought from the animal health at TRU
here in Kamloops is easy to train. Too easy. One afternoon I shot a grouse
and the one beside it got hit with a couple of pellets. It flew off, but it
looked like it was winged pretty good. The gal brought me the first one and I
gave her a part cookie. Told her to fetch the other and ten or so minutes she
came back with a grouse in her mouth. I figured she back tracked to the truck
and grabbed the one out of the rear. She was nubbing my pocket for the other
half of the cookie. We walked back to the truck and the other grouse was still
there. She got the other cookie.
This story doesn't end here. One the way home I spotted a nice two point in
season muley. Jumped out, loaded up and crab walked sideways aiming and
waiting for an opening. The trigger got pulled, the muley staggered, I heard a
thump, the Mollydog jumped out the window. I grabbed her and sat on the
tailgate for ten or so minutes. Fetch was the word and off she went. She found
the deer a few paces in the bush from where it was shot.
Just an incredible day with my best hunting buddy.
Molly is a Border Collie Lab cross. The nose of a Lab and the wit of the Border Collie.
Just an inspiring combination. Loves to fish, four wheel and yep, drink beer.
She's in her senior years, but is a great friend.

My wife harvested a very nice spikehorn buck @4pm yesterday with her 243, on the final day of rifle season no less!!! It was a bang-flop, so Nos was brought in to practice his laydown/stay/guard of the deer while we cleaned it. And... We got another bag of blood to practice blood trailing...

I thought from the picture Nos looked a bit like a GSP so i had to look up the Drahthaar breed. Interesting on the fine line even in a type of dog. I`m going to start looking for a new dog after the new year, i just lost one and my other old girl is real lonely. I`m kind of leaning towards a GSP as i`ve had a couple of them over the years. It`s really to bad they got screwed on thier life span, i get way to attached.

If you like the way Nos performs, have a look at the Kurzhaar... That IS the GSP bred to the same German standards that my Drahthaar Nos is bred to... And yes, breeding makes all the difference! Here's a link for you; http://www.nadkc.org/
