30-06 180 Grain accubond load?

Hey all,

Well I am looking at loading the rest of the 180 grain accubond bullets I have left and I am not sure what weight I should use. My Hodgdon book and the website show a sierra bullet in 180 grain and I am seeing 56-57 for max load for these bullets and when looking at my notes from the first set of bullets I made, they were only 44-45 grains per bullet. I think my original bullets were about 10 grains short but if anybody can help me out with a load that would be great. I have about 5-7 books but none are Nosler so I am SOL unless one of you can help!

I have 4350 powder btw.

My pet load in the 30-06 is 60 grains of Reloder 22 behind that 180 AB.
Shoots sub-moa in my 700 SSDM and graphs just over 2750.

My pet load for .30 06 180 gr. Accubonds, partitions,sierras,and core lokts is 54 gr. IMR 4350 with Fed 210 or WLR primer, OAL varies a bit due to slightly differen ogives on different makes of bullets.this load has been very accurate in every .30 06 I have tried it in.works great for deer and moose, though the last moose I shot at 150 yds broadside 3 accubonds hung up under the hide on the off side.dead moose none the less.
 
I used to like 4350 and 4831 in the .30/06 with heavy bullets. But in more recent years, I've switched to W-760 and H-100V for the higher loading density which resolves some of the compressed load situations which I consider a nuisance.
 
Try IMR 4064 with Federal match primers.

For me, "2 grains below max" load of 4064 behind a good 180 grain bullet has produced excellent accuracy in the 30-06.

I was hoping maybe if they had the nosler book could write down what it says for me. I am not sure of COL or grain and I will be sticking with H4350 as I have lots of it.
 
My Nosler manual [#5] does not list H4350 with any 180 grain bullet.
As for COL, either start .020" off the lands or magazine length, depending on whether you have a long or short throat.

Thanks Eagleye, maybe I will have to go with a new powder. Boo it sucks as I just got 8 lbs of this h4350 and people said it was a good powder. Guess I will get a lbs of some 4064 and try it out with that
 
The online Hodgdon reloading info shows for a 180 Sierra in the 30-06 a starting charge of 52.0 with a max of 57.5 H4350.
I'm sure you would be safe to start at say 54.5 and go up carefully.
I'm at 56.5 H4350 under a 180 Nos. Part. in my old Mod.70.... good accuracy and no pressure...
My other two '06s prefer H4831...
 
4350 is an excellent 30'06 powder. Just 'cause a bunch of contrarians post their load of some other powder doesn't change the fact that either 4350 has propelled millions of .30 cal bullets down range successfully. 8 pounds won't last forever, and when it is nearly gone, you can play with whatever the latest fad might be, preferably purchased in one pound cans. Find one that, for you, outperforms 4350, and then buy a bunch. In the meantime, feel confident that your current powder is a fine, fine product, well suited to your intended use.

Well, the physical maximum OAL is whatever your mag will feed properly. SAAMI says the max for 30-06 is 3.340". I suggest starting with the bullet ogive about 0.030" off the lands and see where that gets you. There is no magic OAL number, it is simply what works in your rifle. This is generally not the same as what the loading book will tell you.

I thought OAL had something to do with pressure as well and thats why the books always had a col listed. Well good to know!


You have a winner powder for 180s in the 30-06. Start at 55 gr and go from there.

Thats what I read many times before and ultimately why I ended up with this powder. Only thing that has me scratching my head, is why my old bullets that I made a few years ago are only 43 and 44 grains. :HR:

Have you actually pulled a bullet and weighed the charge in one of your old loads, or are they long gone down range? Perhaps you simply wrote the charge down incorrectly. That is ten grains less than the starting load for a 180 with 4350.

Could it possibly have been 4320 you used? Would still be a light load, but only by about five grains.

Anyway, having eight pounds of H4350 for your 180 ABs is a good problem to have. :D

I had 2 bullets left and I shot them. They were labelled on the box and I am pretty sure it was right but it was with 4064 powder which makes more sense now as on the Hodgon website, I see max load is only 48grains and when I made these first bullets, I would have started really low as I wanted to be safe.

Yeah 8 lbs of powder and a few hundred AB's are never a problem, just cleaning 300 once fired brass is no fun for me.

That is part of why you start low and work up your loads. The two ways you can get high pressures due to OAL are to either seat the bullet so deep that you create a significantly compressed charge, which some powders don't like (but not all, my .338 Win Mag uses some pretty heavily compressed loads with no issues) or you seat the bullet far enough out to jam into the lands, which causes higher pressures as the bullet offers extra resistance as it begins to move. It is OK to jam the lands (target shooters often do this), but you must develop the load like that from the beginning and not simply try it with an already developed maximum load.
