So about 40 years ago I bought a used 1022. I must have put 40 000 rounds through it without much trouble...I would go maybe 1000 rounds between any problems or a round wouldn't go bang. Life changed and the gun sat in the safe for about 20 years and hardly got touched.

I dragged it out again recently and found that I had a lot of FTF and FTE. Tore it down, cleaned it well, and put identifiers on the mags.

Mag # 1 works perfectly
Mag # 2, "almost" perfectly. 1 FTE per 10 rounds
Mag # 3, at least 1 FTF and 1 or 2 FTE per 10 rounds
Mag # 4, 2 or 3 FTF or FTE per 10 rounds. This mag was found in a Tree Farm sitting in the middle of some shot up beer bottles and pile of 30 30 brass so maybe it's jinxed.

Like I said, it used to work just fine, all the time.

Digging around on CGN I see a lot of recommendations for a Volquartsen extractor. OK, I will try that. I can't see how the extractor is going to help problems specific to magazines but what the h*ll.

Another item that caught my eye was the Volquartsen mag release.

Anybody strongly recommend any other mods?

And while I am here what are your recommendations for scopes and mounts?

Were these results repeatable with a variety of ammo, or did you test just one kind? I can crank hundreds of rounds through my target-barrelled 10/22 (with VQ extractor), but it is still finicky with certain brands (some are sticky and need a bit of encouragement to feed properly or extract).

You could try taking the mags apart and giving them a good cleaning, and checking and/or adjusting spring tension as necessary. The more expensive route would be to buy some new mags and see if they work better.

I specifically cleaned all four mags.

I was using some American Eagle when I found I was having FTE/FTF and switched over to Winchester. About the same results with both ammo, although I had slightly better results with Winch Wildcat.

I am leaning toward a new mag release, rather than new mags. The mag release is what holds the mags in place...if it is worn, a few thousands of an inch can affect feed.

I also recomend the extractor, as it cleared up alot of my problems. I would just do a good tear-down, and inspect your parts with a good light and magnifying glass. If they arn't rusted, cracked or worn, then clean them and put it back together.

Also, I would tear down your mags, clean them and oil them sparingly. You may find that your springs are binding in weird spots or something of the sort.

I had a few 10/22 mags that I found un-usable until I had cleaned them...thats all it took.
