M14 Disassembly - Impossible???

x2 I use a nylon belt or strap. Not that it's super important, but avoids marring the trigger guard area with a screwdriver.
 
Is it really that bad?

I'm surprised that you guys are having so much trouble getting the trigger guard open and the trigger group out. I've owned an M14s, M1A, and Garand and I've never had much trouble at all. Not bragging or anything, but it seems sorta wierd...
 
I had to fight with my first one today. After disassembleing and assembling 6 times it started acting fine. Now to do the other two tomorrow.
 
I'm in the same boat here with my new shorty...

Trigger guard opened no problem but the trigger group wont come out. It doesn't appeared to be obstructed by the stock or anything. No wiggle at all. She's tight.

Not my first canoe trip here either. My 2 Garands and 2 other M14/M305's have never giving me any problems.

Any recommendations on methods of persuasion? :HR: d:h:

****** EDIT ****** Got it!!! Removed stock liner screws, gave the back of the reciever a good whack to make sure it was in the stock tight and jiggled the hell out of it.

I greased the entire receiver and bolt as well as the op rod.
The gas system was left dry but some Remington dry lube might be worth a try? Hungry, Skullboy?
All I need now is a pair of USGI stocks (anyone willing to sell me one please do PM me), and couple of scope mounts as well as a pair of scopes.
The mounts will be ARMS 18 without a doubt.
I don't quite know what rings but I'll get a Bushnell 3200 10x40 Tactical and Barska SWAT 6-24x60 IR.

sixty9santa (now that's a handle) have you considered only scoping 1x of your new rifles for now, and trying the other with irons? You won't be dissapointed!

+1. I picked up a Springfield standard a few months ago, changed out the spring guide for one of M-14 docs and shot 1.2MOA with iron sights. That one won't be getting a scope. My shorty has an Eotech and someday I'm hoping that my build will have a Leupold Mark IV but that is a sniper build (lots of $$ so will be a while).
 
I learned a little trick from a New Zelander fellow that's been working for me...

First I use the tool (T-handle) that came with the gun to get the trigger guard open, easy as pie.

Then while holding the gun vertical by the handguard, I use the palm of my hand and hit the bottom of the stock (not the butt plate, just above the rear sling loop) Actually, it's more of a light pendulum swing of the gun towards my plam, rather then just bashing my actual palm into the stock. Once you bump it a few times you can hear the gun make a rattling echo noise, a slight pull and she pops free everytime.
 
Wow, major thread resurrection LOL this one goes back to 2006 , still stand by my comments (as 45acpking) :D

Lots of times the new rifles are snug and triggers very tight. Tight is good but always check for hammer follow after reassembling.
Wonder , after 5 years since this threaded started... Does the OP still have these rifles? And what do they look like and shoot like today? ;)

BULLPUCKY- i've got the tech manual and it has NOTHING to do with the hole- page 14, figure 3-4 tm 9-1005-223-35 ; the apparatus is installed ion the underside of the pistol grip with a couple of screws- you fire it by exerting pressure on a lever which pulls the trigger rearward- that's the official winter trigger- the hole on the garand is in a DIFFERENT SPOT and does use the hole for the winter trigger

They don't serve any purpose and they shorten the stroke of the rifle.

As far as the hole, pretty sure it was put there to insert the combo tool and remove the trigger guard. That is why the combo tool has that little rod that flips out.
 
Yup, the combo tool has that protruding stem that the cleaning rods thread into to form a T handle. That little stem is pefect for inserting and pulling up stubborn trigger guards

Some do , some don't. I run one just because I have one :D

Does it do anything for anything...........probably not. I couldn't tell from running with and without.

Can I tell the difference in a G34....yes.

In a big old 308 baby killer.....no

That is why the combo tool has that little rod that flips out.

Yes, I have used it from time to time when my other cleaning rod broke in half.

And yup, it works perfect :D
