best 7.62x39 soft point for hunting.

Just wondering if anyone has shot anything other than coyotes, etc. with Hornady 123 grain bullets. Just wondering how those tipped bullets perform on deer.

I bought a box of Hornady SST a few weeks ago at Canadian Tire in Bellville, $39/50 round box steel cased. I have not used them hunting yet. The do group much better than surplus ammo or S&B soft points. Here are 2 recovered projectiles from the same medium. A stack of 2" thick water logged MDF boards stacked face to face at a distance of 50 yards. Hornady SST barely penetrated 4" and expanded very well, the surplus obviously does not expand at all and managed to penetrate 12" stopping at the 7th panel.

Who doesn't like pics. :)

The PRVI work well on deer size game within 100 yards. Never have or heard of one shot further than that and a bullet not going through and through. Having said that, the Hornady does sound like fun to try out.

The Hornady barely did 4" of penetration? That would not be the best for deer if that is the case. I have yet to see a PRVI that didn't penetrate through and through.

I've avoided the Hornady round because they are apparently " special order" and "we're not sure when they will come in next". There is no point of sighting and shooting ammo that you don't know for certain that you can buy again. I have nothing against Hornady ammo, in fact I buy lots of Hornady products, but if they don't know if they can get it again, its not worth buying.

I agree. In my neck of the woods, the Hornady stuff is scarce, but there is an ample supply of the PRVI stuff.

Maybe a local reloading company will step up soon, offering 7,62x39mm hunting ammo.

It's a stupid law that prohibit the export of that ammo in here, but then again they almost all are!

I keep my stash of remington and Winchester for hunting and I bought MFS, Hornady for the trying.. and S&B is next.

We need a local company to step up maby we could email one of canada only reloading outfit to ask.

why not just reload for your self

SST®

Features:
Premium Polymer Tip
The sharp point of the SST increases its ballistic coefficient, making it faster and flatter shooting. On impact, the tip also initiates controlled expansion at all velocities.

Secant Ogive, Boattail Spire Point Profile
It’s a simple fact: bullets that travel faster hit harder. The Hornady secant ogive, boattail spire point profile gives hunters the incredible speed and downrange energy they’re looking for.

The InterLock™ Ring
Ensures the core and jacket remain locked solid during expansion, so the SST retains the mass and energy needed for dramatic wound channels. Perfected in the famous Hornady InterLock hunting bullet.

sounds like it works as advertised.

The OP talked about wolves and coyotes with his SKS.

The 7.62x39 will kill them with ANY factory SP ammo, no problem. We're not talking about elk here. If he lived in an area where FMJ was legal, I'd suggest just using yugo surplus.

Drop the attitude newbie. 4" of penetration is still 4" of penetration. I thought it would do better than that even in a wet medium of anything. I have done enough ballistic testing to know that.

no attitude here, I already stated twice it was tested in MDF. Just because I'm not a post whore does not make me a newbie. 4" of penetration in wood is absolutely not the same as 4" in flesh and bone. I think you need to stop typing so much and spend a little more time outside in the real world.
