I am new to this hobby, currently waiting for my PAL and looking forward to all the fun. I am also a tinkerer. I like to take things apart, see how they work, and put them together again, just for the heck of it. What's the best choice for a tinkerer in a non restricted 223?

I know the clear answer in a restricted is the AR, and in a 308 it would be hands down the M14. No doubt I will be buying those too, so you don't need to persuade me to consider them instead--who buys only one gun? My only question is going to be which one first ;-)

So of the NR's in 223, what's the most self servicable rifle?

Hmmm my .223 is limited so I can only comment on the Ruger Mini 14 and the Kel Tec SU-16 but both are super easy to service.

I prefer the Kel Tec.

By serviceable, I'll assume you mean upgradable. The answer is none. All non-restricted black rifles are relatively smaller market rifles, not huge any where but Canada. Due to this, after market parts are lacking.

Your best bet is a popular rifle with some parts commonality to other platforms.

If your criteria is non-restricted/tinkering, then probably the XCR. You can get adapters for AR-style stocks, and it has rails for whatever accessories you'd like. Also has changeable multi-caliber barrels. People often complain that without loc-tite the whole rifle falls apart so if that's your thing, it's got that going for it :D.

Nowhere near the variety of things you can do with an AR, but nothing else even comes close to the popularity of the AR in the States. Would be (more) popular here too if it were non-res.

I agree, I bought an XCR because it was, at the time, to best available non-restricted 223 Rem workhorse.
If ACR sales in Canada pick up, the ACR might become the best workhorse.

I'd say one of the CSA .223 rifles would be the most serviceable, as it's essentially the same design as the CZ 858, which has good after market support up here.

I love my XCR, great fun, reliable and enough trinkets to put on it to satisfy me. I'm now looking at a Swiss Arms to keep the XCR company; not sure of all the upgrades available, but definitely a reliable, tested true rifle.

Had horrible experience with XCRs. I had 2 of them. I also saw one on the range. All of them jammed . People say they are reliable but XCR forum is full of complains. It took me almost a year of fixing and replacing then I gave up and got rid of it. I would recommend to stay away from them. I'd rather take something that is a civilian version of service rifle. Swiss Arms is a good idea but hell expensive. I do not see other choice so far.

Nothing cant beat the Benelli MR-1 for accuracy, reliability and price, ergonomy is a personnal thing, i love mine... Cheers. JP.

By servicable I guess I would expect it can be disassembled by hand or using only ordinary tools, replacement parts easy to order, I'm unlikely to damage it by trying, and there's lots of "how to" information in the community. Mods and upgrades naturally follow.

Seems like out of the NRs from what I'm reading maybe the mini14 is the most popular platform to modify? Then there are things like XCR or ACR that have been designed to be servicable but may lack the parts market? I really liked the ACR reviews I read but it sounds like a nightmare trying to order replacement anything for it.

Some other posters mentioned some other rifles that I'm less familiar with like the tavor--curious to know what makes these other choices easy to self service.

Suggestions there? I'm not stuck on black, it's just my assumption that military style kit is made to be a field strippable platform in ways that make it more open to self-service than civilian gear, but I am not stuck on black/green if there is another good choice.
