Today I spotted an FN model 49 semi auto in 8mm Mauser. It felt like a pretty sturdy rifle. I had a 5 shot mag.....fed with a stripper clip.

The rifle looked hardly used and the rifling was in quite good shape. The seller wanted $600 for it.

Any opinions?

Definitely worth it!

Be sure to find out if it has a 2 piece firing pin or a 1 piece...

It NEEDS to have a 2 piece firing pin if you want to avoid possible (or eventual) slam fire/ out of battery fire/ exploding receiver issues.

Let me know if you are not going to take it, I am in AB too! ;)

Strip the bolt!

Not that hard actually. I have done it twice to change firing pins.

First time was to replace a bent 1 piece firing pin (which could have locked into place and created a slamfire situation) and changed it with another 1 piece firing pin.... This was before I knew about the dangers of the 1 piece firing pin.

Second time was to replace the 1 piece with a 2 piece firing pin. :D

If you want that calibre and the gun is in good condition, that sounds like a good deal. The were also made in 7x57mmMauser and, probably the least common on the market, .30-06 which I think commands the highest price, all else being equal, for the rarity of the gun in that calibre and common availability of the ammunition. (I'm not sure that reflects actual production numbers of .30-06 rather than people hanging on to them or they didn't get into the surplus market. It's the one I want and I have seen very few for sale, and never when I am in funds. :( ) They were also built in 7.65x53mm for Argentina and the Argentines are said to have converted at least some of theirs to 7.62mmNATO.

The design is the forerunner of the FAL and much of it would be recognisable to someone familiar with the FAL. It should be a ten round magazine, but our rules require it to be pinned to not more than five, so it is probably the original magazine, pinned. It would make little sense for someone to have made a new five-round magazine. I think the design has the magazine detachable, but I think I heard the gun won't work without the magazine in place, and it wasn't designed to be used by reloading with extra magazines but with the older stipper clip concept.

The 8mm FN49's were originally sold by Allen Lever for $49.95. All were in vg-mint condition from the military.
