XCR 6.8 Kill shot

Hmmmmmm is that mini a factory 6.8?? That would be an awesome little gun for sure!!!!!!!!

Ya, I bought it from Brobee. It has a few of his custom touches and was worth every penny I paid for it! Quickly becoming my favorite gun. It is ideal for Southern Ontario where .277 is the biggest calibre you can hunt with.

Get some facts straight first before making statements. It is illegal to hunt with .223 in my province.

Secondly I have never shot from an elevated position before and the round went down to teh leg. Now that she is skinned and gutted there is no meat spoilage at all, it caught the joint after hiting the lung and sternum.

Also going to a smaller round to prevent spoilage is never ever an excuse for taking a poor shot that spoiled an animal. If I was not sure of my placement in the front end I would not have taken the shot.

I can back this statement by admitting openly that I turned away at shooting a buck earlier due to distance, he was moving too much, and I could not be sure of a good shot.

I made a responsible choice, took a good shot, I now know that shooting from an elevated stand means aiming six inches higher at 200.

Thanks for all the comments on the black rifle shooter again!!!!!

I never said you should've used a .223. I just saw the explosive damage on the front left quarter there and made a comment about some people thinking .223 isn't enough for deer. Like I said, my comment wasn't intended to flame you or insult your calibre choice, and at no point did I call you unethical. From what you describe, I can only assume that you're a very ethical hunter. Also, I'm aware that you can't hunt with anything under .30 cal in Saskatchewan. Cheers on the kill man!

This isn't entirely true. Only some of the more heavily populated WMUs don't allow larger calibre rifles. Where I live, for example (WMU 84), you can hunt deer with any calibre you wish.

To be clear then, the hit on the oposing side leg was a fluke. It looks like damage until you skin the animal and see it just loked bad but the loss of meat may be a couple ounces at most.

.223 will kill a deer, we have old times around here that used to take deer with 22 magnums as shot placement is always the most important aspect. I know a guy that deer hunts with a 300 win mag. Now that is over kill as when it hits a bone you have massive fragmantation I have seen it. I do agree with cancers statement that some people shoot small animals with far too large a caliber in my opinion as well. I do not think that 6.8 SPC is too large however at all. I actually wish I could use .223 as the ammo is cheap enough I can shoot the heck out of the gun enough that I will know what to expect at different ranges and what the limits are as well. I think .23 is a great deer caliber but since I am not allowed to use it I have no idea first hand what it would do to a deer.

As an aside note as well, using a small caliber because you can makes the shot placement far more important then say with a 6.8 or .308. I have wounded and had to track an animal for hours, I swore after that first time i would never do that again since it was not humane and the meat was poor since the animal was stressed. Also it was very cold with deep snow so the tracking was very very taxing. Clean immediate kill is hunting but injuring and maming is not so I choose my shots carefully. I think most would agree.

XCR took 2 more this weekend. WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, so apparently I should be charging rent for my 6.8 XCR.... Every guy I know wants to use it. And I admit, it does have "cool factor" for hunting.

But seriously... why the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks do I have to clean the darn thing after everyone else did all the killen'. It just ain't fair! I wanna kill something!!! :p

Seriously, congrats to the guys that used it and filled tags. I suspect it will have about 2 more deer, maybe 3 by the 7th. That's a busy XCR. w:h:

Yup thanks again to creamy aka my buddy craig for buying a great piece of land and letting mytake his 6.8 for a test drive. Great round combined with tons of animals to pick from.

Bud we gotta get finishing the cabin in the spring now. Looking forward to next year with some healthy fat bucks!!!!

Now I am torn do I buy a 6.8 xcr or a 260 xcr m ????

I understand that comment a lot been mulling over it for sometime now...

I have an OD green XCR-L with matching rail complete OD green uppers in 223 & 6.8SPC I can't afford to also have a -M but a -M in 260 Rem and a conversion kit in 338 Fed later would be awesome for everything I hunt here in BC whereas the 6.8SPC is as far as I am concerned to light to reliably take elk/moose/big bears.

Yes it can do it if everything is perfect but...

So do I stay with my -L that accepts 10 round LAR 223 and 10 round RA 6.8 pistol mags or do I sell the entire set up and get the -M?

Sticking with the -L for now but you never know may have to get that -M one day...

A 243 is the smallest caliber you can hunt with in Sk right now.

On the L versus M debate I am thinking stay with the xcr l since I have my M14 shortie custom for 308. That will stop large game in a hurry.

Technically the wording is that you can hunt with ".224 Cal and greater" in Saskatchewan. Basically that limits you to .243 and up. I don't think there is an obscure .23 cal out there, is there??

It doesn't matter.... .257 Weatherby is all the bullet you EVER need! :stirthepot2:

Though I myself want an XCR-M in .260 and in .338 Fed if they ever make it.
