Who really got their worth of the season this year.

I had one of the funnest seasons this year and probably logged in the most hours I have since about 2008-09.

August 15-Sept. 1st-ish- Baited and shot a Black Bear

Late September- Grouse, Geese, Steelhead and Coho Salmon

October- Moose hunted, seen a few bulls (no tag) Shot a Calf the 3rd week of Oct.

Late October-Present- Chasing deer, got a shot at a doe in archery season but botched it (back to the 3D ranger I crawl). Had a few close encounters with other deer during November Rifle but didnt have good shots.

Presently- Playing with guns, getting them set up to smash the 400-600 yard gongs all winter long :)

I find it interesting that many are listing the number of things killed as evidence of the "worth" of their season. It would never occur to me to do that.

How much time spent hunting - that might be a measure. Stuff that happened, odd wild things seen, something learned, gorgeous days spent in gorgeous country, stories around the lunch fire at noon, sunrise, sunsets, excitement about close chances, shots NOT taken, animal behavior stories, the color of early fall, what I saw while glassing, friends I hunted with, horrifyingly tough bush I pushed through, some new territory I walked, all those might be a measure of the worth of my season.

I have not yet fired a shot. Didn't use my elk tag. Couldn't find a big mule buck during the season. The two sons of my favorite hunting partner both got bull moose this season. I was there helping find, track, and outsmart both, and the joy on their faces (first ones for both) was a source of worth. So now I'm not sure I need to shoot a deer. They will give me shares of both moose. My wife and I can eat only so much meat. A sausage deer might be a good idea, but my son may come later, so I better save a tag so I can hunt with him.

What was this season worth so far?

I can do all of that the other 9 months of the year. Hunting season is for hunting and for me to feel truly successful there needs to be some meat in the freezer at the end of it. We have relied on the meat we hunt for a decade or more. We ate 4 deer, a hundred or so waterfowl and a home raised pig last year. It has become a big part of the hunt.

I hunt because I enjoy cooking and eating the results. The sunsets and good times with family and friends can come anytime.

I took a week off for deer hunting during black powder season. shot a nice doe on Tuesday of my week off. As I was walking out to get my quad to bring my deer out I put off a lot of partridge so on Thursday I returned with my shotgun to try a get a few. Of course I watched a nice 8 point for a while sunning himself in an old hay field. (only had 1 tag so nothing I could do) i tried to see how close I could get before he took off. I did pretty good got to within 50 yards before he figured something was wrong. Yea I got my moneys worth in aces. A bad day hunting is 100% better than a good day at work.

still have my bear and whitetail tags. Didn't even get one grouse this year. I should have spent more time "in" but my partner spent twice as much time, and ended up with the same results. A new hunting area next year.

Bunch of grouse
One black bear archery
One whitetail buck archery
One whitetail buck muzzleloader
One whitetail buck rifle

The one thing I really wanted to do but didn't get around to it was go for geese. Not enough time.

I had about 4 days out in archery season. Got out for elk and got a big cow. Whitetail rifle season has been non-existant thus far. Never have ### in february if you want deer in november. But I did get a new hunting partner out of the deal which is more valuable than 100 hunting seasons.

That sounds like a great season! I like the way you think too.
My 2011 "season" started in January in Germany and pretty much continued all year at home. Since the end of August I have hunted 2-4 days each week. Success could be measured in
- the joy experienced by of a couple of 11 year olds on their first hunts,
- The joy I experienced hunting white tailed ptarmigan for the first time, on the very top of a BC mountain with my old bird dog,
- the fun I had assisting a couple of adults with their first hunts,
- having a new puppy find, point and retrieve to hand both huns and pheasants like he was a seasoned veteran and not merely 7 months old,
- The wonder of geese piling in to the decoys at dawn,
- and mallards at dusk,
- finding numerous beautiful bull moose while mentoring a lady friend & first time moose hunter who had a cow tag,
- being able to hunt moose at home for a change instead of going "north" to the bush,
- mentoring my youngest son to help him get his first pheasant,
- taking a friend from Germany for a variety of waterfowl and enjoying his enthusiasm for something we kinda take for granted,
- baiting and waiting for a big bear for the first time in over 20 years,
- taking a first timer elk hunting,
- teaching a class of 17 new hunters and shooters in the Saskatchewan Hunter Ed / Canadian Firearms Safety courses,
- helping "push bush" at moose camp and the good times with buddies there,
oh,
I could count a few wild boar and a roe deer while hunting in Germany last winter, some coyote furs to sell, a bunch of beaver for fur and bounty last spring, various varmints last summer that won't be pestering our farm any more,
AND because I have a big family and we do eat a lot of wild meat, a freezer full of bull elk, calf moose, a couple of mule deer, a big bunch of waterfowl, some yummy pheasants and huns, and a bear.
I think I'll give a whitetail or two away to charity and then call it a year for meat hunting before I turn back to hunting/trapping furs.

It's been a Very VERY good year!

I've had a pretty good season so far. Started out missing a nice buck when we went up island for a weekend hunt, the next month it was moose hunting up north, my partner had a cow draw and immatures were open and we both cut our tags. Then back here for the rut and dropped a nice buck, and to top it off I'm going up island for five days to back my pal up on an elk hunt! While we're up there we can hunt deer as well - they should be still in the rut... This may be my best season yet!

Didn't do as much chicken hunting as I like to do but I shot a cow moose and filled both mine and my wife's Whitetail muzzleloader and rifle tags with 4 bucks.
Still have 2 antlerless tags open until Dec.18.
I have had worse seasons, that's for sure! :)

Longwalker..... ya done done us proud.
Good on ya.
If you don't spend enough time out in the bush, you got
no one to blame, c'ept yerself.
Today I done did a sin.
Missed most of the day off Nutzs here.
And definately blew the kitty...................
Now I have some winter projects and a few toys to try out.
Git y'er arse out there..........................time's a waste'in.
PS....... take a newbie with you tooo. Nuth'in wrong with shooting rims....... :)

I for the first time in my life was able to hunt on my own land instead of having to ask for permmission to hunt on other peoples land or find crown land to hunt on.I could set up my blind and leave it there with things inside instead of packing it back and forth.

Started off by shooting a nice Tom during the turkey season, continued by shooting a 42in wide Bull moose and finished it off by shooting a big fat White Tail doe!

I think I did pretty good this year

Had a fantastic year. Managed to take a wild turkey this spring on my own after my hunting buddy moved to Whitehorse. It was the first time I used a diaghram call in the woods and it actually worked!! Then managed to take a nice 6 point buck this fall. Got to see some great wild life, watch some fawns chase each other around, watched a buck chase a doe around and really enjoyed some nice time out enjoying nature. First time field dressing a deer on my own as well. A big year for me considering my hunting partner wasn't around. Sure felt great that I was able to do everything myself and have inspired another buddy to start turkey hunting. Can't wait to take him out next spring. Put some meat in the freezer, and sure enjoyed my time out in nature, taking in all that I could and enjoyed every minute of it

My season was ruined in Oct when some dickwad stole my ladder stand whilst an unnamed company put a road through my cutline back to a new gravelpit. They took the tree too.

This was my first hunting season, I got to spend alot of time hiking in the woods with my wife and my gun. I got two whitetail does and learned alot about hunting. I mostly learned that I have alot to learn. Today was my last day out for the season and just after first light a little Whitetail spiker came running down a hill and stopped 30 feet from me he just stood there looking and wondering. It seems they know when you don't have the right tag.LOL

Going to head back out to the cabin this weekend with the kids, got some tags to fill but to be brutally honest Just huntin with the boys is good enough for me. If we get some sausage meat it'll be a bonus for me. i think I get more out of the hunt watching them get something than I do harvesting a deer myself. Still love my venison but hunting's more than just big horns for me. Getting out in the woods with family and friends is what it's all about. I feel sorry for those who judge the quality of their hunt by the B&C score.

Great Sept and Oct. The weather was awesome I got out at least two times a week and saw a pile of game. Second part of the season fizzled right out. Weather sucked and work drained every bit of my time.

However, a friend nailed a monster and just found out another friend got one as well. At least some one is getting out there. All in all can't complain. Buck and a doe in the freezer but no wall hanger this year. Never got out for birds as number reports around me were dismal so I never bothered. Hopefully getting out for yotes but the long winter months are setting in.

Time to play with some new toys, stay sharp with the bow, and scout for new areas to hunt and work on charming my way into getting permission on more land:D
