deer hunting with a shotgun?

There's no reason why we shouldn't be allowed pistol caliber rifles in those WMU's that allow muzzle loaders or shotguns. ie. .44 and .357 come to mind.

For an old man like me there are some universal truths.
Rocket launches notwithstanding--what goes up must come down--its called gravity.
Here's another one for ya-- a shotgun at close range is a wicked, wicked weapon!

I am surprised at some of the distances people claim to use buckshot at. I have four shotguns and none of them pattern worth a darn with buckshot. The best hunting here is in areas that allow buckshot only, so I have adapted my hunting to point blank range. Over the past 7 years, the longest shot I have taken on a deer was 15 yrds with my closest being almost touching the muzzle.

Yesterday, I had a broadside shot at a standing deer at about 30 yrds. It dropped in it's tracks and was dead by the time I walked up on it. When it was skinned out there were two pellets that entered below the spine, one through the guts, one in the ass and fortunately for both me and the deer,...one through the noggin.

If not for that one lucky pellet through the brain, a wounded deer might have died a slow lingering death in the bush.
I am no fan of buckshot but it does work well if you are close enough for how your shotgun patterns.

I've used a 20 gauge single shot smooth bore, with 3" single slug and managed to get a couple of deer over the years with it, and they are lethal. Now with the savage 20 gauge rifled slugs, those would be a step up form the single shot smooth bore I've used. I'd like to see a left hand bolt in the savage 220 and would use that anytime...! Possibly ever more often then a rifle.

I have a 15 year old Browning BPS Game Gun with a 20.5 inch smoothbore barrell but a 5 inch rifled choke tube that allows you to shoot sabots.

I use BRI sabot slugs, when sighted in at 100 yards, the drop is about 5 inches at 125 yards. The BRI sabots muzzle velocity is 1350 fps which keeps the recoil down. Deer hit with these slugs go down like they were hit with Mjölnir (Thor's Hammer)...:p

I am also surprised at the distance some claim to shoot deer with buckshot, post # 43 makes my skin crawl with the thought of how many were crippled. I would hesitate to shoot past 100 yards with an accurate, scoped slug gun.

I also cant believe buckshot is the norm over the much more accurate slug. There maybe too many uninformed, hill billies out there.
