recently there was a thread around here (locked down now) about all the troubles people have had with the service at Epp's.

I had made an order a couple of days before that thread came to light, and was a little trepidatious (sp?) about what I might have gotten myself into.

Well, my rifle came today and here's the verdict:

- made a total of 3 calls to Epps; one for "stupid questions, patient answers", one to make an order, one to check on delivery status. Throughout each call, the staff were outstanding: useful, polite and willing to assist. No sign of this condescension I'd heard about. (+1)

- On delivery, the rifle itself appears to be pretty much a thing of beauty. No indication that it was dragged behind a truck, used as a golf club or anything like that. (+1)

- I did have a problem, though, with getting the wrong length barrel. They advertised one thing, but shipped something else. It appears the initial website information had a typo. (-1)

- I emailed Epp's about the barrel; they were very good about answering my email within minutes (+1)

we'll see how things turn out, but so far Epp's is winning 3-1 :):):) - :( and I am pretty happy that I decided to deal with them.

I'll chime in only because I bought a rifle there and (after the expected 4 month wait) they had it shipped to my door within 24 hours.

I never knew a dealer could get a rifle to the customer's door so fast (Kingston at the time). The price was also well below the competition. The service was meh, nothing to complain about.

I've been waiting for pictures of a gun for a week now. Three emails and three phone calls and I can't even get an employee to describe the gun to me. I asked one employee "do you have the gun in front of you?" He says "no...it's behind me." I said "Can you turn around?" He turns around, says he can't find it. I ask him to look for it and he says he doesn't know where it could be. So I hang up. Phoned back twice and nobody could describe it to me. The only thing keeping them from a sale is me seeing a picture of this gun or having it described to me and they can't even do that. I'm ready to drop hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars at your store and you can't give me the time of day...you musn't want my business too badly. It continues to shock me that people praise these people. I have felt more appreciated as a customer through a voicebox in a Tim Horton's drive through.

Umm - go to the store?

I find Ellwood to have outstanding, friendly, and fast service when buying a gun over the phone. They update their website regularly which is a definite plus.

The things I don't particularly rate them high on is their timeliness to email response (I don't bother emailing at all anymore) and the way they grade and describe gun conditions on their website. Often the description contains information (or lack there of) that is incorrect, vague, irrelevant, or omitted.

That suggestion smells of blaming the victim, probably not the intent, just comes across that way.

+1 on the caveat emptor.

Not to be a spelling police, this posting editor comes with a spell check, misspelled words are underline in red. Who KARES, SPEELING is IRARELEPHANT ;).
Maybe a little more research on your part on what you were buying would have alleviated alieviated that barrel lenght length problem ?? Just a suggestion - Jim

ill second that for the conditions i had purchased a rifle from them jumping in head first shot 10 rounds and decided it wasnt for me traded it in on something else and checked back to see if the gun was listed again and it was but listed only in good condition when it was clearly never abused or anything it was still new in my mind

Two different handgun purchases this fall with great results.Fast transfer & shipping.
They don't notify when shipped like others but get the job done++.
Another plus is that the Website is updately daily which makes it great when looking for the 1 special gun.

They are probably OK as a walk in store but shipping is expensive since they are charging a handling fee. Possible problems and policies mentioned makes me wonder why people order there.

If you check their web site, you can see that many bolt action rifles come in different barrel length, I wonder if they pay the shipping charges forth and back this time?

It was behind him. Heading out the door with the walk-in customer who just bought it.

The internet is great. Instead of failing locally, you can piss off THOUSANDS of would-be customers all over the world.

+1 on SFRC's website - although I PM'd Chemist about some 22LR and I haven't heard back in a few days :S

Well from my experience their service has been frustrating this last time around. I'm decently patient, but when things go wrong what bothers me most is incompetence and usually the attitude of those guilty of it.

Ordered a gun early last week and specifically asked for it not to be delivered and to call when it's in so I can pick it up, checked the next day with the CFC that the transfer had been started, all good. Called CFC again yesterday to check on transfer, it was completed two days after my purchase, but no call from Epps, ok no big deal. I call Epps to check if everything was done, guy checks and calls back that it was shipped when the transfer came through last week. I tell him that I specifically asked for it not to be shipped, and this is where I have an issue, no apology nothing just a brush off like he didn't give a crap. Fine, no trip to Epps, just wait for the mail. Today I check the mail and no gun, phone Epps for tracking number, nice lady checks and says the gun is still there with a note saying not to ship. WTF I just wasted a day off waiting when I could have driven and picked it up. I don't mind screw ups, but don't waste my time, and when you do screw up please just acknowledge it or apologize.

Based on my experience, rant and Epps don't belong in the same sentence at all. My Savage LRP in .260 Rem showed up quick, and my emails were answered promptly and politely. I would not hesitate to order from them again, and I'm halfway across the country.
