I'm looking to find some documentation outlining the physical differences between a few of the AR308 options out there. I'm particularly interested in a DPMS VS Armalite VS KAC-SR25 style designs. Alternatively if anyone knows of mechanical drawings for the DPMS or SR25 style lower/upper that would work too i already the armalite one.

I'm beginning an AR308 build from scratch and the availability of information on the internet is sparse hoping to find some help here.

I would group the DPMS and SR-25 into one category, and the Armalite in the other. Virtually all .308 AR's will fall into one of these two patterns.

Among those, receiver heights, receiver thicknesses, receiver threads, pin sizes will differ.

By 'from scratch', do you mean you're CNC'ing your own uppers and lowers?

As mentioned there are a few issues with compatibility.

There are actually three types based on magazine although that doesn't mean they are compatible with each other. It's hit/miss.

1) DPMS/KAC/LMT/POF etc us the original AR10 mag design, frequently referred to as the DPMS mag because they were one of the first to go main stream with a 308 AR for the civilian market.

2) Armalite/Noveske. They use a modified M14 mag which in the 3rd generation is very comparable to the DPMS one. The earlier ones were fairly clunky and like the early DPMS mags there was a question of reliability.

3) RRA. They use the FN FAL mag. The same as the RFB.

For a build. The Armalite with a CADEX lower from One shot tactical. Armalite ones are extremely difficult to get. A barrel from some other manufacturer which will require some gunsmithing will also have to be sourced. The Armalite parts are sold by Wolverine. However Armalite barrels are metric marked so a no go. Armalite Lowers are not available right now.

The easiest build right now seems to be to go with a DPMS build using the Mega upper/lower which will use either DPMS or Armalite parts (you have to pick one or the other though) and uses the DPMS mag system. It looks to be a good quality product. If I were doing a build and not going with a specific company then I would consider this.

The only thing with a build is it can end up costing more than one of the guns from the manufacturer. The good news though is you get exactly what you want.

The 308 AR is my favourite especially for an accuracy rifle. But they aren't cheap. Entry level is $1800, mid over the 3K mark and top is about 6K.

I personally would recommend a 1:11.25 twist barrel. They shoot 168 and 175 SMK rounds exceptionally well. Both are easy to get and there is a ton of reload data. If you don't reload then just throw in some Federal Gold ammunition. Sub .5 moa isn't uncommon with a DMR or target style rifle. 1:10 is ok but I find I generally only want to shoot the 168 or 175 and the 1:10 requires fiddling with reloading to get the best out of it. That's my own experience, others may vary.

yes, was easy enough with an AR15 but documentation was plentiful and there wasn't any concerns about compatibility (also having access to an AR15 to compare and see what went wrong helped)

that being said i don't have an AR or a complete set of cad drawings to work from, just the upper and the lower receiver which i know is based on the armalite design.

I am fairly confident that the armalite and the dpms lowers are dimensionally the same with different positions on some of the pins again i could be mistaken, i must admit my knowledge of AR10's is lacking currently (hence the call for help : )

CNC Guns has an AR10 (Armalite pattern IIRC) lower receiver you can download the file from. The guy there does all sorts of cool stuff, and has all the models available for you to see and check out!

I do have the drawings for the upper and lower receivers (courtesy of cnc guns thats where i got the AR15 drawings i did as well)

mostly i'm asking so i can understand the differences between varients and be more educated when i eventually buy parts to complete it.

hmm i think i'd best try to find someone locally with an AR10 or some varient so i can do some comparisons as i go. I wonder were dogzilla is from :p
