I have been shooting handgun for more than a year and would like to try some IDPA shooting. I am in Toronto. Here are some newbie questions:

1. Do I need to be a member of IDPA? If so how can I join it?
2. Do I need to take any introductory course like the BB course of IPSC. I never see one being organized in Toronto area.
3. How can I find any matches? When I go to the website the calender is empty for Ontario?
4. How many mag and mag pouches do I need for a regular match?

Hope someone with experience can help. Thanks.

1. Do I need to be a member of IDPA? If so how can I join it?

Once you are done a course you can give it a try and if you like it join IDPA formally and you can shoot sanctioned matches.

2. Do I need to take any introductory course like the BB course of IPSC. I never see one being organized in Toronto area.

Basically you need to take the New Shooter Orientation course (NSO) or any holster course. The NSO is good because it goes over all the rules of IDPA etc. They have been held at Orono a few times, the Marksmen Club, this forum is the best place to find them.

3. How can I find any matches? When I go to the website the calender is empty for Ontario?

Again this forum is a great resource. Sanctioned matches come up now and again but informal ones happen weekly or biweekly at several clubs.

4. How many mag and mag pouches do I need for a regular match?

You never use more than 4 mags really (including the barney, which will make sense later). So you have two on your belt and one in the gun. It is not IPSC so no need to cover yourself in mags like an awsome christmas tree of death.

Then you can come

"the barney". I had to think about that one for a second, then laughed out loud. "Barney", good one. The awesome Christmas tree of death line is great too. Thanks.

Not to derail/hijack, but is anyone using the G22 mag in their G17 for example, to avoid the barney mag? or the M&P40 in their M&P 9 (not sure if this works the same as the G mags).

Are glock mags 100% when you do this?

If you shot one of our matches doing this, it wouldn't be a big deal. Though we'd be watching the other mags to make sure they aren't exceeding div capacity.

Thanks for the info. I think I have to wait for the next NSO course then. PM me if you know a course is coming around Toronto area.

A very good point. Down in the US where high cap or normal capacity mags prevail I have seen two FTDR's issued due to guys completing a stage, being walked over to the next stage in the same pit, hot, and then completing a reload to start the next stage. They inserted a mag loaded with 11 rounds. Opps 12 rounds in gun, including the one left in the chamber at the end of the last stage and both did it inadvertently.

It won't happen up here if you just stick to 10 rd mags and use a Barney mag. Keeps things simple. When buzzers go off in a competition, simple is a good thing.

Take Care

Bob
