Is now the time to get rid of classifications?

Is now the time to get rid of the illogical firearm classifications of prohibited, restricted, non-restricted? OIC prohibitions for what would ordinarily non-restricted or restricted by the rules of classification etc. I am thinking of the AR-15 and semi-auto Kalashnikov and the magazines that go with them.

Whatever you're smoking, I want a double. The AK will NEVER come off the list.

the AR15 with 18.5"+ barrel - MAYBE. The argument you would have to use is that it is a prolific sporting rifle in the USA. It would help if aboriginal groups started clamouring for it up north.

No. Let the LGR die, then when the sky doesn't fall, push for the reclassification of certain prohib guns. The antis will have less credit, and us more. Push for a few of them to be re-classified as restricted, like the FAL. It's politically workable and not too extreme as to scare all the "neutral" parties, as they'd still be registered and the use restricted.

we need to push back in stages just like they pushed gun control in stages. LGR gone, next mag restrictions. Next Clasications. And CCW. First of all we must focus on adding the second amedment to the charter of rights, and constitution just like americans. Right to bear arms.

I say we hit em with everything we got, daily, without pity.
Lay down our cards, and let em freak. It will be all the sweeter as we march towards our goals.

We already have this, it has just been forgotten, not that previous lefty governments have nothing to do with it...

I agree on getting rid of magazine restrictions next. (My Pmags made me say it...)

Get rid of the damn ATT's would be a very simple thing to do and have a massive impact. Apart from the different license requirement, transport and storage laws ect, it would put Restricted class firearms on the same level as non-restricteds in the sense they both can be discharged anywhere it is legal to discharge a firearm (Like crown land or private property). Thier is no law stateing restricteds can only be discharged on ranges, its the ATT's that keep them their. Unless I missed that part when I read that part in the Firearms Act.

Upping the mag capacity to 10 to match pistols would also be quite easy.

Then focus on takeing some of the less "Intimidating" guns off the Prohib list, the FAL, BM-59, SG 550, ect. the AK unfortunately is the black mark of all firearms and most likely will never be taken off the list.

We need to take this in baby steps. Do a little, wait for the storm to settle, and repeat. We also need to get some educational media out as well. A few Ads on TV and in papers directing to a informational website would probably help a lot.

Yep. I doubt we'll ever get a "second amendment" but pushing in stages is how we're gonna fight off the gun control monster. Getting rid of the LGR may be the easiest thing we ever do... we had massive voter support and a political party made it part of their platform...

Mag restrictions and derestricting the AR should be the next priorities. Then MAYBE CCW or deprohibiting the FAL, G3, etc

As already stated, taking guns named in OIC's and changing them to restricted (or in SOME cases maybe even non restricted) and getting AR15's with N-R length barrels un-restricted, would be a great start.

I would also really like to see some cases where normal capacity magazines would be allowed, and maybe use that as a stepping stone to get rid of mag-cap limits. Say for 3-gun and IPSC/IDPA type stuff, if you are a member of a league you can use normal capacity magazines... Again, when the sky doesn't fall it would be a start at getting rid of the limits altogether.

The mag limits have practically killed most of the competitive shooting in Canada, and it would also stimulate the economy (more shooting leagues and people buying semi-auto rifles).

But the key here is baby steps, all our rights didn't get stomped on in the span of a year, it was slow and steady, and that's how we need to undo it. I doubt we'll see all our rights restored in most of our lifetimes if things keep going out way, BUT its a start and its for the shooting community in its entirety, and our future shooting generations!

Being allowed to shoot a .22 handgun anywhere I can discharge a .308 would be good step

Ha, I showed my mother that when i first bought a 9mm.
9mm beside a .308win cartridge.

This big one here, I can shoot out back in a rifle.
This little one, if it's in a handgun, I have to take it to a government approved range.
I also need permission from the RCMP to take it to the range.
Do you think criminals are asking for the RCMP's permission for their already illegally acquired handguns they plan on committing crimes with?

Take the AR out of the restricted category and get higher capacity mags back in would be awesome. The ways in which so many guns become restricted and so fourth is outright rediculous in this country.

Push for a few of them to be re-classified as restricted, like the FAL.

I follow your logic, but I don't think the FAL is the best place to start. I've been told by those with first-hand experience that the FAL (at least, the C1A1) can be converted to full auto with a paper match stick. The boys at the RCMP lab might actually be able to prove that one.

There are plenty of others on the list that can come down though. Hell, most of the guns on the list are already prohib by virtue of the fact there are no dedicated semi-only variants (converted auto 12.3). The banned-by-name list is basically a list of popular action movie props :p

An actual, factual definition of what constitutes a variant would be welcome as well, but we all know about that situation...

Who cares what something "Can" be made to do, it should only be what it Can do? Making it do something else is against the law!!!!!

Exactly.

A lot of things can be used in a criminal activity but we don't go ban cars, tools, plastic bags or skii masks.

C-19 has not become law yet. It still has to clear the Senate.
The Government is taking real heat over C-19. They are unlikely to want to expose themselves to even more with additional major changes to firearms legislation.
It might be possible for non-legislative, administrative changes to be made. There are a lot of policy areas that could be improved.
