Use jacketed load data for cast??

I have 255 gr CB's for my Win 71 348 and my M71

I have load data for most but was wondering if i can use jacketed loads for comparable wt cast?

Mostly was wanting to use R19 for the 255 gr CB's I cant seem to find any load data.

That powder is a little on the slow side for cast bullets, 42-45 grs. of 4895 is good cast load.

I get two cast bullets for my model 71 from a buddy. One 230gr GC and the other 262gr GC that look very similar to the Lyman #350482. I use IMR 4198 with both.

In the 348 WCF actually I prefer jacketed bullets. Probably the most readily available is the 200gr Hornady but a while back I lucked into a couple boxes of old 200gr Winchester Silvertips. Something else I picked up are two Barnes bullets, the 220gr and 250gr Barnes originals.

I have about 400 255gr gc I did a few yrs ago experiment with other powders, what i really want to know is can I substitute jacketed with cast load data..

250 gr.Barnes "o" 60.5 grs R19 were by far the most accurate load I have tried.

I have 2lbs of R19 and figured I want o simplify life ie same powder , same bullet same primer..
Well good thing i have 4895 and 4198.

I'll try to post data . later..

btw I found i also have 8 boxes of 220 Barnes X not sure either load um or sell em

Good question, I've never really done an indepth look at a comparisson along that line and I'll start by 'assuming' the cast bullets are hard cast. Going by a very quick check on your question looking at data from Ken Waters Pet Loads, where comparissons are possible, it would 'seem' loads for jacketed in the 348 WCF are higher powder loads than those using cast bullets of a comparable weight. Again, that's at a very quick check.

Another 'quick' cross reference between loads for the 250gr in the Barnes #4 and those listed for a 250gr GC cast in the old 1st Edition Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, with the same powders, not much difference.

If you're not going to use them, how much?

When loading cast bullets in a bottle neck cartridge, your prime concern is that you may load them at too fast a velocity and will need at least a water pail size target at 100 yards.
It's not excessive pressure you worry about.
With good cast gas check bullets in a calibre like a 30-30, you can use the same data as for jacketed bullets.
Any calibre that shoots the bullets at a higher velocity may require a lighter load, than for jacketed, in order to get accuracy.

Why I am shooting more cast!! I will hang on to them for a while but if i ever sell them i will give you first dibbs.
Last gunshow I saw boxes of Hornadys at $45 !!! and they are the cheapest of jacketed.
Good news I see lots of brass kickin around ..
Also, one company said they were gonna import Buffalo bore 250 gr cartridges..albeit at around $100/box
Some of the yanks on American sites say win. is doing a large run of 200gr probably cuzz of the new M71's ??
Anyone order one of the new ones?? Have not seen or heard much and if any made it to Canada??

I appreciate that . In just about any of the calibers I have, rifle and pistol, I always enjoy reloading and shooting 'stuff' I haven't tried before.

I've picked up a couple of boxes of that newer production run, primarily because I was a little short of brass at the time. I've since lucked into a couple of good finds of brass so I'm good to go for that component, probably for as long as I own and shoot my model 71.

Any details or photos of your 71? The first one I had was a standard grade however the one I presently have is a deluxe. A couple of photos of it that I've posted in past.

I have used Re19 and H4831 in my last 348 with 250 and 270 grain cast gas check bullets. Basically I used the jacketed starting load for those bullet weights and added approx 5 grains of PSB shotshell buffer to compress the load lightly. If I recall correctly the 270 grain load had to be arrived at for lack of available data. Accuracy was as good as that rifle ever delivered at any time and both powders appeared to burn cleanly. This rifle would not accept 4895 loads as high as H4831 suggested before accuracy fell off sharply. 40 grains was the last acceptable accuracy. A different or harder alloy may have improved that but I prefer to keep my hunting bullets softer than some other people. The two slower powders allowed me to increase the velocity with retained accuracy.

My avatar shows me with a picture of my M71 .. the load I used was? it was with the

255 gr I currently own.. The cast bullets were ordered out of the states...if I remember

correctly it was "Stocker" who put on to this supplier .

I dont have a butt plate on mine ,, I am missing the front hood site.. my opinion is

your wood finish is nicer than mine is..

Anyway loaded 1/2 doz each ..OAL 2.800" with a Lee crimp and R19..
When i loaded them in some old boxes it showed i used 4895 .42 grs. cant remember if they were perfect load.?? time will tell and I'll post results mon. nite.. I am gettin my chrony back sun and wanna check vel.

Less pressure with cast boolits . I start my loads abit lighter and build a safe load
