Here's a good deal: Dec. 8-14

Remington 597 .22LR
20" matte blued barrel with sights
10rd detachable mag
dark grey synthetic stock

$124.99 after $25 rebate and $40 sale savings

Can't beat that...also Federal Champion .22LR 525 pack $16.49.

lebaron has it as well if you have one in the area. 159.99 minus 10% if you're a member. and the rebate. i bought one this past saturday. they have a pretty decent price on extra mags too, 10 and change for the 10rd mags and 13 or so for the 30rd

The 525s are down to 16.50 again?

I bought a case an a half in the spring for that price thinking we would never see .22lr that cheap ever again. Might have to add to the stockpile

Better than the $30 cambodian tire wants for the same brick

Is there a link to view Cabela's Canada flyers online?

Here you go, scroll to the bottom of the page for the flyer. But the flyer is still active for Nov. 24 - Dec 4. Once it expires they will post the new one. Strange that the new flyer always comes in the mail a week earlier than when the sale starts.

Remington Model 597 Semi-Auto Rifle w/ Scope

Hi, I purchased one of these from Cabelas.ca and it had a sticky bolt issue, Cabelas replaced it with another, after firing it the bolt ruptured below the extractor. Cabelas graciously replaced the rifle with a Ruger 10 22 and included a Simmons 3-9 x 40 Scope for the same price and did not charge me shipping. In short you may want to just go with a Ruger to begin with although the length of pull is slightly shorter. I did however prefer the lighter trigger pull and the over all fit and finish of the 597, maybe I just got two lemons.

Never owned a 597, mostly because of the experiences like the one described above. If you are in the market for a semi 22, right now Bass pro has Marlin 60 on sale for $159. Not a big drop in price ($20) but in my opinion a better choice.

Did you clean it befor shooting it?

My 597 has about 20 000 rnds through it with minimal feed/ammo related issues. For the money you cannot go wrong.

Bolt guid rod burred and bent

Yeah, I thoroughly cleaned the rifle the first issue was with one of the bolt guide rods, it was burred on one end and had a slight bend in it. It would not come out of the receiver without prying it out with pliers “that is what the gun tech at Cabelas said" the second is self explanatory; some other folks had a similar issue with bolt ruptures. Google "hole in bolt below extractor remington 597" you can see photos. I will say I really like the fit and finish over the Ruger.

Nothing teaches kids how to safely handle firearms like clearing numerous ftf and fte.

haha kidding, with good mags they feed fine and run great. I love mine.

597 Problems

.
The sticky bolts, FTF, FTE, and bent guide rods of the Remington 597 are typical problems, mostly caused by the operator. The guide rods have two screws to hold them in place, and Remington suggests 10 INCH POUNDS of pressure when ettting them up. This is less than ONE FOOT POUND of pressure, and tightening them too much puts a bow on the guide rods. Consequently these bowed guide rods rub on the bolt during recoil, slowing it down and causing malufunctions.

The solution is to turn the screws in finger tight, then back them off 1/4 turn. Also, older magazines contribute to the problem. Generation 3 mags are much better.

Another problem is that the guide rod springs can enter the back of the bolt when the rifle is being reassembled. Newer 597 rifles have a larger end on the guide rod springs to prevent them from jamming on the guide rods and bolt.

New guns also need to "wear in" a bit. About 200 to 300 rounds of mini-mags through one will smooth the parts out a bit. The trigger pull is not the best on the 597, but a Volquartsen hammer will take care of that.

A big plus is the man sized stock, and they seem capable of outstanding accuracy. For a total of $125, I think it is an outstanding value.

I love .22's. Have over a dozen currently and, have enjoyed many more.
My 597 is a fine semi. It is as accurate as any of the semi's I've owned and, if they're "your" thing, 25 rd mags are available n' cheap. Silky bolt, "full" sized gun!.

You really do have to clean it and, check the guide rods(new). Even the 3rd gen 10 rd magazines can bind a bit n' be problematic. Never an issue with the hi-cap mags. I bought a weaver base.

I have hit a bottlecap at 100yds...lol not on the first shot! We were passing the rifle back n' forth "competitive"...5 for her (miss) 5 for me (miss) 5 for her (miss) 1 for me! I shouted "That's it...I got it" You can see the "landing" of sub-sonic ammo at 100 through a scope. 4 more misses (finishing the mag)....both of us were VERY close for the second mag.... Good cheap semi

-The only semi .22 I miss is a Marlin 70HSC
-I won't own a 10/22
