So I sat there contemplating my bowl of track soup after a day of hunting deer that just weren't there. My mind was drawn back to the grouse that nearly made me make a smell that would break through my scent lock hunting clothes. And then I thought combination gun! That would let me bag those grouse and occasional rabbit I see when i am driving deer out of the bush for everyone else!! Then i won't have to pack lunches either, oh this is getting good. Drillings, yes, those European hand crafted works of art, that would be just the ticket. Open wallet, fan the moths out of my face and realize oh yeah, little kids at home, wife on parental leave, huh, not so much.

The point? Does anyone do a combination rifle in the sub $2000 range that is going to work well for mixed bag hunting? Like the Baikal 12g/30-06. Or is this more of a swear at than swear by sort of piece.

Thanks,
Steve

The Baikal's absolutely do the trick.... and are under 700 bucks....

I've often thought the same thing, even thought of carrying a pellet gun in my pocket..... but just like when you stop to pee and put your rifle on your shoulder that's when you'll see the biggest buck of your life.
So I've decided to let the grouse go and come back after the deer season!!!

I fail to see anything here that can't be very well handled by your preferred flavour of 12 gauge. Generally when I'm dogging my 26" Xtrema is in my hands.....slugs in the gun, trap loads in my pocket. With the bypass option on the gun I can carry it open and either close it on a slug or drop in a #7 in about a second :)

And since you are talking single shots anyway (with a combo gun), a nice short (26") O/U with double triggers and slug/birdshot loads would be even faster than selecting on the Baikal

Hah! This year i was hunting from a tree stand at sun set and it was when i woke up I saw my deer for the year! I know dangerous as hell to fall asleep up there and i tried not to but it was a really long day that day. Safety harnesses, my best friend.

Wrong Way you do make a point about the slug and bird double triggered over under and i have one now actually. The additional range and accuracy of a rifled 30-06 barrel is attractive though.

Two options we have always used:
Pump shotgun with you preferred deer load in the chamber, and next round in the tube is a #4 shot, 3'rd is Deer worthy again. If a grouse, bunny pops up, cycle the action and shoot. If a Deer presents itself, make that first shot count, and pump twice if you need a second shot on the deer.

Other way to go is .22/410 over under. This is great if you are "pushing bush". Slug in the .410 for the deer you wake up and almost step on, .22 for the grouse & bunnies.

i have a savage 22mag/20ga. i don't go after deer with it (altho until the deer tag is filled i carry a couple of slugs with me). my only complaint would be the sheer weight of the thing, i really need to get a sling for it because after those long walks my arms feel 2 inches longer.
