im not new to reloading but i have somewhat of a noob question. i have over a thousand of those target load hulls. can you reload these? as they have a steel base. i know in the rifle/pistol world, resizing steel is a no no. whats your opinion?

IMHO the Winchester Universals are only fit for the trash bin. Even Winchester advises against reloading them. Sorry for the bad news....

While all hulls 'might' be reloadable, some are not worth the effort for the results produced, IMHO. This is especially true of the Winchester Universal hull. If even Winchester advises against reloading them, you can take it to the bank they are not worth the effort.

I reload them all the time. I only reload them once, because they dont seem to crimp as nice the second time. I only use them for 1000 FPS loads for target/IPSC loads.
They work great.

Kids deprime and resize.

I guess what I don't understand is why buy good reloading components, take the time to reload and try to break all 25 every time and then put it in all in a crapy hull.
You can get STS for 5-7 cents each and have a top quality round for 8 plus reloads not one.
I think if you guys patterned some of these junk and that is what they are junk hulls you would leave them in the trash. I have been pulling the mec handles since the 60's some years shooting and reloading 15,000 rounds and never an issue when you use quality components. I justs have a hard time understanding what you think you are saving especially reloading the ones with the seperate base wads. If you don't think they seperate they do and they will jam in barrels and destroy them. I have seen it happen a few times over the years. What is your hands, eyes and gun worth?? Too Dangerous for me. Sorry but pics like this win X3 semi just stick in my mind

3macs1 has some valid points

Competition / hunting loads I use AA or STS hulls.
Sxxt blasting loads for practice and fun, target hulls work great.

Some great info at Shotgun World and Castboolits.

most hulls are 2 piece ive never had a base wad go down the bore (ive used alot of 2 piece ) your not going to find anyone selling hulls on this side of the border so use what you can get your likly not going to find any AA,AA-HS,sts,ect at the skeet range most people use the bulk federal and win stuff you find at walmart

just for you guys that say 2 piece hulls are no good i have 500+ ivi and cil imperal hulls that ive now loaded a bunch of and shot them a few times over (i do chech the base wad every reloading) and so far ive loaded trap, hunting, buckshot, slugs in these hulls
and these hulls are 2 piece and have a paper base wad(i got to say these are tough as nails got to love canadian made ammo)

winchester universals.
Toss em and start collecting either those W-AA's or those Rem STS's .
They are easier to reload and offer better cost recovery .
You can usually collect several hundred at the trap club between squads assisting in the clean up. Unless this is a club rule(assisting in cleanup) you should be able to gather enough to get you reloading for hunting or for shooting the clay sports.
Tight Chokes=crushed birds...

Buy some factory Winchester AA HS when they have a promotion. Get them for 9 bucks a box minus the 2 dollar factory rebate. Win. HS will load 8-10 times before burning up too badly. They replaced the now defunct AA compression formed hull. Some feel the latter to be superior, myself included. Remington STS hulls are very good as well but almost impossible to find where I live. I would toss those Universals in the dumpster.

How long have you been reloading shotgun????In 46 years of reloading shotgun I have never been able to come up with a method to prove any seperate base wad hull is safe to reload so please share this method you use and don't tell me by looking at them. Not to mention imperial hulls have to be the worst considering there is no published data for them any more and most would be sitting at least 35-40 years.Do you not think for one minute that fiber base they used has broken down??? I can just imagine what your pressures are with today's powders in them
In the end if you shoot long enough you will see first hand what a seperate base wad hull can and will do to your gun and hopefully you will be Ok when it does you are playing with fire and it will bite your ass.But in the end it is your gun and body
Saying you cannot buy hulls where you live is not looking very hard.I have a brother not far from you and a friend in brockville and they have no problems buying them.Sure maybe if you want them for nothing. I just called for the hell of it a shooting supply dealer in Ontario and he has almost 40,000 12ga alone, 8000 20 and no 28 or 410 right now but is getting more.
The Gundealer in NB stocks them also check under ammunition 10 cents each for 12ga sts.Buy some flats of sts if you have to.
I hope your good run of luck continues and I apologize for coming across so strong on this but your hands and face may thank me some day Kind Regards.

ive been loading for 3 years now but ive loaded some things most have not including subsonic(birdshot, buckshot and .690 roundball slugs) ,double slug, buck and ball, rod shot(just a lead rod thats about .312" and the same length as 3 buckshot), and shells down too 2" and ive loaded the normal stuff birdshot, buckshot, slugs

when i get federal gold metal or winchester aa i load them when the crimp starts to go bad i trim them down to 2 1/2" then to 2" if the primer pcoket is lose i use my Primer Pocket Conditioner to resize the primer pocket

i have load data for the ivi imperal's theres some in the lyman third shotshell book

Not that it matters but the data in the vol 3 is for canuck target loads and I guess you have the red dot and cci109 yes 109 primers and vintage wads they call for. It doesn't matter.
With what you are doing it is not if you are going to have an incident it is when. I just hope some other shooter is not standing next to you when it occurs and gets hurt. To each their own.

you can sub the 109 primer for the standered cci 209 (make dam sure your not using the cci 209m) the wads are the same and the powder is the same as the stuff today even if the big 3(fed,win,rem,) have stoped making some wads you can find them at claybuster, duster and downrange make them

2 piece shells have been used for well over 100 years as long as you make sure the base wad is not lose in the shell your not going to have a problem

these ivi,cil imperal shells (same as canuck but just high brass) are tough the base wad is hard to remove(i made a few powder scoops for blackpowder out of the brass part and i had to drill and peck away at the base wads to get them out) there alot tougher then some 1 piece shells witch only need a little heat and you can pull the hole tube out :p

I wonder now why I tossed all of this old crap. I could have sold it to you guys. Just don't understand with so many good hulls and components out there today why anyone would be reloading some of this old stuff unless for nostalgia purposes.I loaded a ton of it back in the day because it was there but not today.
The reference to the c109 was just that.Yes the old nickle or zinc plated I cannot remember
CCI 109 and the CCI 209 are interchangeable. But the CCI 109 is not interchangeable with any other 209 or the CCI 209M.The CCI 109 also has a covered flashhole so can be used with ball powder puts the pressure up about 500 psi and corroded terrible which is why they stopped making them.Christ I just cleaned out my reloading area a week ago and there is a probally 2000 hulls here going to the trash nothing with more than 4 reloads, sts , aa nitro 27 , old blue peters. Looking at what you guys reload I must be nuts for tossing them.

The ones in the trash pile I won't send you but to get you reloading some good hulls and save your fingers for a little while I have a bag of once re loaded (117 in the bag) you can have for shipping. They are like new
They are not my reloads since they have cheddite primers in them so pending the vintage may have to have cheddite put back since there was a period the cheddite were a slightly larger diameter than a regular 209 and only cheddite would stay put.. Send me a PM with your mailing address if you want them and I will get the actual shipping costs for you.
My apologies to the OP for going a bit off track here.
