I found this gun on sale at this price ($399) on a sponsors site. This is for the .30-06 version and comes with a scope.

Seems like a great buy to me, what are the drawbacks of this gun, compared to say the 700 SPS DM which Ive also found on sale but at $550?

Which would you choose?

Buy it for the rifle itself, and ditch the scope (and rings). I had a 300WM 111fxp3 and it must have been a lemon. The thin barrel was so prone to heat induced change of point of impact that I had to have it rebarreled. I haven't heard anyone else mention this problem, so I am guessing its not common.

The Savage is a decent rifle.
The scope needs to be pulled and used for credit or put
on a rimfire.
Did this walk with my daughter's boyfriends.
Cross hairs fell out after about six or so shots.
Trigger was a bit stiff, but, there is room for a bit of adjustment.

An easy fix for the trigger is to replace the wire with a slightly smaller diameter. You can buy the wire at radio control hobby stores. The lighter diameter creates a lower spring rate, as opposed to backing off the tension screw, which has its limitations and can cause problems with a lack of tension on cocking.

Curious: Which sponsor is offering this deal?

I picked up the 11FCXP3 in 308 just a couple weeks ago, and I am VERY pleased with it. The trigger is easy to work on, there are plenty of online tutorials available. BUT be very careful as it's also very easy to induce slam fires if you do it wrong.

As everyone will tell you, the scope and mounting hardware are not very nice, but they are usable. Probably won't last long.

G-peg: I'm not too surprised to hear the 300WM wanders with heating the barrel. I have no issue with three shot groups in my 308, but a string of six and she REALLY starts to wander. For hunting, it's not an issue for me.

Second shot and it would be an inch high at 100 yards, third shot was close to 3" high. Made for a lousy 3 shot group. Also wasted a lot of time and ammo at the range. After replacing the barrel with a heavier profile, I could shoot 5 shots into a inch. It was as different as night and day.

A young fellow brought me his rifle one day, he had the bolt out of it and the bolt wouldn't go back in. Showed him how to put the cocking device into the fire position, when the bolt was out, and of course, presto, bolt slides back in.
However, I have heard so much about Savage, like, "Get a Savage," but had never really looked at a new Savage.
Yuck!
In my opinion they look awful. Some kind of easy to apply "finish" on the metal and plastic stock and----
In short, if I had one it would be stored in another cabinet where someone invited to look at my guns wouldn't see it.
Oh, by the way, I have heard they are good shooters.

I think Savage sells thousands of these package rifles every year, I bought two of them last year (300wm, 30-06) and haven't had any scope issues yet and both are shooting great. With the savage and you can always upgrade the scope later on if you feel the need to do so. I've got lots of Remington 700's and they are great rifles as well but for the price I'd go with the Savage.
Happy shooting!

They have all the charm of a black stove bolt.

Not the prettiest but its a solid rifle, DM works well, and the recoild pad works well.ive got one wearing a Shilen stainless barrel in 6.5-06 . The trigger can be adjusted or replaced by aftermarket.

The only thing I dont' like about this model is the availability of Aftermarket stocks for the DM model .

Savage package rifles are decent entry level hunting guns.

NAA.

That's a pretty decent rifle/package. There are better scopes & rings for sure but those will work.

4 or 5 years ago I picked up one of the , NIB , in a 243. $ were very reasonable figured it would make a 'truck gun' ; some of you guys will know what I mean.

It rode in my old suburban (under the front seat) from October 1- late Feb , for 2 years. Shot a bunch of coyotes, fox, several deer . As I said , not the best quality scope but it held zeroe and shot well.

Guy I sould it to was happy as can be.

Would buy it long before I would buy a Remington 700 SPS these days

IMHO you can't go wrong with the Savage package rifles. Replace the scope later if you want. I have had one in .270 for a few years & never had any problems with the scope in the first 2 years I used it. I later replace the Simmons scope with a Bushnell 3200 & the rifle is very accurate. I heard a lot of bad comments about Remington s quality control issues of late, so I stay away from to new cheap Remingtons.

I have the rifle, changed bases and scope thou. It's very accurate, if that's what you wanna hear. No other work was done on it. When I finished sighting it in, I could hit a dime 3 times in a row from 100m.

I have helped sight in a few of these rifles for people at the range, the rifles are a great deal for the price but the package scopes tend to be horrible.

I liked the 30.06 and .308 but found the 7mm Mag to be a bit of a teeth rattler in the light stock.

When I get the money together I'd love to find one in .308 for my wife who just got her hunting licence.

I bought one for my son a couple of years back to start him off for $429. What can I say, for the price you cannot expect something pretty, but it does function nicely and dam it is more accurate than it costs.
