12 twist .223's

I've fired many 223 Rem rifles with 1-12" barrel twist and with a high quality bullet such a Sierra's 55gr BlitzKing will shoot very accurately at up to 500m but the bullet won't expand at such a range ;)

At 500m the bullet enters the transonic zone (1300fps) and you can expect some degradation in accuracy and some 55gr bullet designs might even tumble.

Try Sierra's 55gr BlizKing, Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tip and Berger (up to a 63gr FB).
If you've never shot Berger bullets you might be surprised by your rifle's accuracy!

A good 55gr bullet will never match the ballistics of a 69 or 77gr target bullet but it will be very accurate at up to 500m.

I've shot Bergers out of various rifles and found them little more than fluff. Over-prices fluff. If I was to be stuck with a 12 twist I was eyeing the 55 vmax as a viable option. Course I havent shot Bergers out of a .223 and I'm sure you have no reason to lie about your Berger accuracy experiences :D


This wouldn't be so hard it I could just find a 9 twist Kimber or Ruger hawkeye, run 75 grain amaxs and carry on...

The Hornady 75gr A-Max requires 1-8" or better barrel twist (like a Tikka T3).
The Berger bullets that I'm talking about are flat based, tangent ogive, not high BC bullets or VLD bullets which can be very difficult to tune.

I think I almost bought a 1 in 9 twist Kimber 223 here in Edmonton at Cabela's. Only reason i didn't is because it didn't come with a detachable magazine.

There was a guy in the reloading forums that told me that shooting MOA at 1000 yards with 55 gr. sp's should be no problem so I wouldnt' worry about BC just yet. Mind you he was shooting a 22-250 so there was no holdover required :eek:
 
I have shot past 300 yards without too much issues at paper and I pasted a 'yote at about 420 yards or so with a 50 gr v-max (Remy 1:12). The bullet did not have the same explosive knockdown as it did at 150 yards and it required 2 subsequent shots. Yes, the first went through the shoulder, the second hit the lung just lower of the shoulder and the 3 rd severed the spine.

That's why I use a 243 (70 gr nosler) for the longer shots. The bullet still explodes on impact and tough Mr. Wile. E does not move much after that. :D

From experiences with .223 is 63g the max recommended for a 1 in 12. I have read that I think in a few books??

Ive heard tell of folks slinging 75's out of 9 twist...havent seen it in person though...may have to buy one and find out for myself :D

Ya and they got one in 7WSM :O . No lay-away, 1499 new....no NIB Montanas for me...used off EE only.

Sounds like the yote was dead, he just didnt know it yet! Im not too worried about rolling yotes. Around here they're scarce, and if I see them my Kimber .270 win will take care of any DRT's I need.

That sounds about right. I was thinking 53 vmax/55 vmax as a viable option.
