Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25 x 4 review?

I have a VX-R 2x7 in the mail right now. I plan to do a CGN review once it arrives. I know its not the Patrol model, but they should be fairly comparable. There is surprisingly little information about these scopes on CGN for some reason. It gets amazing reviews elsewhere though and was named best scope of 2011. Check out Chuck Hawks if you haven't already. I always trust their reviews.

I agree not much noise about them on here. They've been available for quite a while here I thought.

Not a true 1x at low power is the only thing I've heard some don't like.
Might be a decent medium cost alternative to NF etc was my thinking

The patrol versions of the VX-R have mil turrets and different reticles than the hunting versions. Two models a 1-4x20 and a 3-9x40.

Not in Canada yet, but I am told January or February arrival.

Thinking of the 3-9x40 version for service rifle. Mil dot reticle with tactical 1/10th mil turrets.

Looks like good and much cheaper alternative to the 2.5-10x32 mil dot mil radian zerostop nightforce I have been coveting!

I'm expecting my 1.25x4 Patrol in the next week .... From Prophet River.....
Seems to be well received down south, so I'm going to try it just for the reason you stated- cheaper option from NF and other higher end stuff.
No zero stop, no 1x at low end, but nice MD reticle and center dot with auto shut off.

That's what happens when I don't call every dealer in the country! I will try them!

Love some pics and a review when you get it!

will do!

Edited to add: Dec 5th...
Just got the word, scope is in transit now... unfortunately I won't be in town for a couple weeks..... so review will have to wait till then.

I've been calling around and no dealers in my area have even heard of the Patrol model that I've called. Weird thing is that it's not on the Leupold site...the VX-R is but not the Patrol. I think it would be an awesome budget sub. for a Mark 4 on my new M-305.

Prophet River, eh...

They seem to be new enough that they are not in stock "up here" yet in quantity.
Call or email Clay at Prophet River. He can get it pretty quick.

Prophet River does have them, but they are not on the website. Email Clay. I just received my VX-R 2-7 from them yesterday. Customer service is great and the price is the cheapest in Canada. This scope is amazing as well.

Arise thread! Arise and serve me!

So, there was one of these scopes on the demo rifle at the Leupold display at P&D Enterprises, and I am in love with it.

Has anyone else had experience with the object of my affection? I won't be jealous.

It seemed to have better clarity than other scopes I've tried but it's right around that price range where there any many other options.

I'm in the market for a low magnification "practical" scope, that I could use for hunting or target shooting out to perhaps 300 meters. I would prefer to buy a single one rather than getting separate hunting and target shooting scopes. I'd like to become very familiar with a single one.

I had one on my XCR and aside from hating MRAD I loved it. The glass is very good for the money. Clarity, resolution and colors were, in my own words, "what I should see when I look through a scope". The illumination is a one button affair with a memory so it returns to the setting you were using when turned back on. It is daytime visible but not that nuclear glow of an aimpoint. If you need that much brightness you're probably too blind to shoot or trying to shoot into space on a sunny day. Do it at night instead. For the rest of us there are no issues picking it up quick like an RDS. Like most 1-4s there is some distortion on 1.25x but you get used to it quick. The eye box is huge! With a half decent cheek weld you'll find it about as quick as a reflex, never having to chase your sight picture. On 4x all distortion goes away and the VX-R glass really shines. I didn't shoot at 800 yds but I pulled the scope off to check out treelines and oilfield leases at that distance and was thoroughly impressed and satisfied with the optical quality. That's no easy feat for me, I'm picky as f**k about glass. The clicks could use a little more tension and a more solid stop between clicks. The turrets are nicely marked but were a tad mushy for my liking. Not in a bad way, just something I'd like to see improved upon. Fit and finish is Leupold, zero dissapointment. Bottom line is Im always nervous dropping big coin on optics and this one met all my expectations except the turrets. If they were MOA (my preference only) and a little stiffer I would love this scope long time. I say if the cheaper options aren't floating your boat but you're not sure you're ready to drop $1300 on an NF then the Leupold is your best bet.
