Got some really basic questions (about my Supernova)

Today I traded in my Glock and with a little added green got myself a Benelli Supernova – my first shotgun. Now some questions I am sure you guys can help with.

  • It’s my understanding that the Supernova chambers any length and type of 12 gauge round, did I understand that right or miss something?
  • What’s the best shotgun round for home defense? I would assume buckshot?
  • Is there much benefit from putting optics on a shotgun? Maybe for higher accuracy when shooting slugs?
  • In theory, I could get a longer barrel for it and use it to hunt? Or am I on crack?
  • Any recommended accessories that will fit on it? Light and shell "holder"?

Thanks in advance!

The Super Nova can shoot 3 1/2" and below

No 4 Buck is the best IMO

Yes Reddot sights work very well "doc optic"

Yes you can but it will cost alot

  • Any recommended accessories that will fit on it? Light and shell "holder"?
Nope its good to go as is :D

Thank you for your reply!

  1. Is it possible to get non-lethal shotgun rounds in Canada? As a civilian.
  2. What type of shotgun ammo is allowed at shooting ranges generally?
  3. What does the length of a shotgun round determine? The amount of gun powder? Or buckshot pellets? Or both? Or am I stupid?

[*]Is it possible to get non-lethal shotgun rounds in Canada? As a civilian.
Your not trained to use it, so I would stay far away "Its a whole can of worms from a legal prospective"

[*]What type of shotgun ammo is allowed at shooting ranges generally?
Slug, Buck and birdshot

[*]What does the length of a shotgun round determine? The amount of gun powder? Or buckshot pellets? Or both? Or am I stupid?
You get more Shot pellets

Would not count on it. A 1 ounce load of #4 has the same amount of pellets in a 2¾" shell and a 3" shell.
The length of a shotshell determines it's final fired length.
The box stats will determine payload (# of pellets) and powder load. You can get and shoot heavier payloads faster with 3" shells, but it's not a guarantee.

Hey would you mind telling me your barrel length on that thing? Id love to have a short barrel for my nellie....mmmmm....

As previously mentioned aftermarket barrels for the nellies are not really available and if you can find them it makes more sense to just buy another gun for the cost.

People complain about lack of accessories for the supernova vs the 870. IMO there is everything you need for the supernova unless you want to make one of those ridiculous high speed low drag shotguns. Nordic components, mesa tactical and somebody else make good quality shell holder and mag extensions if you look around. I wouldnt put anything on mine except maybe a shell holder, but they make cloth ones that I cane easily take off anyway. enjoy man- thats my favourite gun you have there.

I am sure the barrel length is 18" - it is pretty much flush with the magazine tube. It is surprising that barrels are so expensive, I would have thought it couldn't be more than $200 or so.

I would love to get a mounted shell holder, but it might be tough to find, but I will look. Also have to get myself a 1 point sling for it.

Although I haven't shot the gun yet, I am already in love with it. Got to love the little button on the grip that allow you to not chamber a round from the mag.

yeah- if youre a glock guy especially. I brought it home and my brother and I decided it was the glock version of a shotgun. all plasticy.

Protips- theres a forearm rattle on some of these which can be tightened out by tightening an alan screw on the forearm. ask around if you notice it rattles too much.
Also remember to really shuck the forend back- its a 3" gun. me and a couple friends have managed to jam it by shucking the forend back super gently

The advantage of the 870 series of shotguns is the relative ease of sourcing accessories and barrels. The benelli is a great gun but you have a significant investment to make the benelli nova tactical into something else. The advantage of the 870 is you can have a number of barrels and stocks which allows you to make your shotgun into a duck gun, then a long tactical, then a short tactical gun and finally a upland game gun. Hard choice but I would go with the 870 for your first gun.

That all being said, the benelli nova tactical is a great gun at a great price. I like the configuration of the gun particularly.

The key to use of a tactical gun is to get to the range and shoot it. You need to know the gun and how it performs. The standard generally is OO Buck (9 pellet) and rifled slugs. You can find the ammunition in most stores and you need to shoot it rather than caress the ammo. Head to the range and shoot it.
