From DI to Piston

I'm not HSLD, so sinking another 3-4 grand in a AR is not an option, for under a grand the AA is a good offering the reviews and reports are very positive.Chopper 1 has been using one and his reports are G2G.
At the end of the day this is just a hobby, so I don't caught up in the "better or worse" rhetoric over the DI vs Piston argument. Just my $.02

I hate cleaning my ARs, so being inherently lazy when it comes to this aspect certainly has its advantages with a piston system. That being said, I was also very impressed with how much cleaner a TiNi and nickel boron BCG run as well. If it were me, I'd just choose a piston upper that was designed so from the outset as opposed to a kit. And since DIs seem to run just as reliably, if it's the cleaner aspect one is after a new BCG might do the trick too.

I guess there's no love for pistons or piston kits,I had the same opinion about AA until I started reading some reports and contacted an end user like Chopper 1. I don't have any reservations on getting the AA upper.I guess it all comes down to perspective.

If a person had a million in the bank and nothing to worry about would that person not be buying a HK 416 or HK MR223 over any DI. If they were only going to purchase one gun? Just a question? I do not own an ar and I have never had the pleasure of shooting an AR...yet. So I have no opinion. But I was under the assumption that these HKs offer like 30,000 rounds of problem free use. Like I said I have no idea, just what I have read.

Well, I sold a few of my ARs and funnelled that into an HK because I wanted one, really rock-solid piston AR. It'll probably outlive me...

I have shot the HK and the cocking handle sucks and you can not put a tac latch on it :(
It did not blow me away ethier "its nice but not a big enough improvment over a good DI"

No one has really jumped aboard the AR Piston chu chu train yet "lots have trailed it though"

The AR15 "newer ones" are combat proven in the desert and artic. They will have stoppages here and there, but so do the piston guns

Pistons are great for MCT operations though

You mean the same one that's basically on every AR? Depending on the HK you can simply put it on a different lower - so it's the best of both worlds.

The 416 I handle had the cocking latch on both sides "i dont think there interchangable with AR cocking handles"

I could be wrong though

ye initial question was about changing uppers from DI to Piston, as lower and another brand upper can cause problems. As I mentioned before, I see for both platforms benefits. It just I cannot justify for now buying HK 416, as much as I wanted and for entry level to AR, I got DI one. Form there, I hope in future get upper as a piston one and go from there. Maybe or maybe not

I never swapped the charging handle out in my MR223 since it seems to work fine for me but I'm pretty sure any standard AR one will fit. I've seen "gas buster" charging handles advertised that "divert harmful gases etc away from the shooter", but if this is a problem at all, it is certainly less so with a piston near the front of the weapon.

Here's one from a current darling of the DI AR world:

Again, if you wanted to use it it should slot right into the MR223. Same with a "tac latch" gizmo.
