A spoter No.1 I did for a friend

Hey guys, I just finished up my buddies No.1 and wanted to share the results.

(Note: I did NOT refinish the mag, 2 lips are broken on it so I didn't touch it, so yes that is rust on the mag in the after shots.)

When I received this specimen, I was skeptical as to how well it would turn out, but after removing the rust and bluing I was shocked to find very little pitting! What pitting I did find, I cleaned up with some 300 then 400 grit wet and dry.

Nice work! It is fun too. I had one that I had to clean up as well, very similar to yours. Lots of surface rust, almost no pitting. Go figure. Some time when I get ambitious, I will bed the forend as on the box o truth website.

Did you note how many hours you spent?

Don't really have a definate number, most time is waiting for the wood to dry, or danish oil to soak in or just prepping the work station for the next step..... But I'd say approx 10-12 hours, with prep time, not counting waiting for things to dry.

Tell me again why there's still rust on the magazine? Seems like even a bit of oil and a bronze wire brush would clean that up nicely without having to worry about any dislodging of the damaged magazine.

Yeah, defiantely could just rub the rust off, even if just for the pics, but the owner said he wasn't going to use it again, so I left it.

I guess in hind sight I should have just omitted it.

Ah, that explains it perfectly. I have to admit I was wondering why you'd do all the rest of the stuff and then ignore that. Now it makes sense.

Again kudos on doing a really sweet looking restoration on the ol' girl. I especially love that you used methods and materials that tried to restore it to the original service style of look as much as possible.
