Hi all - after alot of research and gathering items together over the past 2 years I am almost ready to try some service rifle competitions. Just a few questions I promise. ;)

As a civy and complete competition newb I am confused about tac vests. What I need is a way to carry 5 mags securely as the line sprints forward (as seen in Hungry's Video - that video hooked me!) correct? So there are cheap vests that look like they could work but they say for airsoft. Then there are the molle vests that you can put your own molle pouches on right? Basically I don't want to show up looking like a fool (more than I already will :)) Are vests all one size fits all? I am 6'4" and 250lb on a good day so will any vest fit me? Yes I have been working on cardio and am down 20 pounds already...

So far I have 16in 1-9 twist armalite ar15, acog, pmags(6), fully set up to reload a bunch, and I am at the range once a week on average.

One problem is none of the ranges within a few hours drive have more than 200 yard rifle range. I guess I will have to do my best and hope the BDC on the acog is correct for the 600m shooting using 62 gr projectiles.

Thanks guys I would rather sound like a fool here than in person next year:D

Exactly what type of service conditions matches are you going to be shooting? Before you go any Further buying equipment, you need to know.

Don't worry about what you look like. The other guys who are shooting just want to know that you are safe and competent to handle a rifle without cause risk to you and others.

Nobody will expect you to have all the perfect gear the first time out. Nobody else did either. Your gear is something that you have to evolve with you as you get experience.

Now, that being said I am Service newbie too so I look forward to the response of other more experienced nuts.

Thanks for the replys - I think I will try out the match in Nanaimo and Chilliwack next year. I believe it is non CQB the one that goes out to 600 meters anyway. I am also set for service pistol with a 1911 and plan to take the black badge course in the spring.

As for safety - 20 years ago I shot PPC and have training through work with AR15 and shotgun plus hunting 30 years etc... Trust me I will be nervous and overly safe...

If you are shooting matches 1-12 you do not need more than 2 mags. 3 is ideal because it's nice to have a backup. I stick my P-Mags in the pockets of my jeans for the rundown. No vest neccesary. I've lost many points because of stupid errors, but they were all user errors, my lack of tacticool equipment has never cost me anything.

I use a Norc AR with a 3-9 Nikon hunting scope on top and I do just fine. The only thing I can say is that the equipment may only make up 5% of the score if that. It's the shooter that counts! My only advice is if you want a vest get something cheap. Then go and shoot a few matches and decided what works for you and what doesn't and go from there.

Oh ok thanks I thought I needed more than three - I can use the jeans method also.

Will your Acog give you precise elevation settings for the different ranges? How about windage adjustments?

I forget the model but it has the lines for 100 to 600 yard apparently it is configured for 16" barrel shooting 62 grain bullet. Windage I suppose Ill have to guess?! As you can tell I am / hqve been mostly a pisrol shooter.

You should get in touch with Gunnerlove on here as he is a very experienced SR shooter that lives on the island.Actually I would say he IS the most experienced SR shooter on the island.Queen's medal winner to boot. He will most likely be at those matches and possibly running them.
As for kit, well bring what you have. You will quickly figure out what works and what doesn't.Its different for each person. If you have a vest that works for you it can help you gain points believe it or not.
Like someone said,3 mags is about all you need. An acog will work but you may eventually find that you need something more adjustable.
Best advice I can give you is forget all the expensive stuff and use the extra cash to buy practice ammo.Get off the bench and don't bother practicing the prone much.Anyone and their dog can shoot prone.Instead shoot sitting ,kneeling and standing. You will have a rapid increase in score if you concentrate on these positions and they are what weeds out the men from the boys.

Listen to Longshot's advice. Its golden. He's a pretty fair shot himself, too.
Just one comment about shooting prone - it is the easiest position, and it is really important to work hard on the others. But to place high in the prize list it is more or less a given that a shooter will clean or almost clean the prone stages. Then the trick is to not lose points in the other positions.

Thanks guys, Gunnerlove actually contacted me and we are going to meet up for coffee in January. Looking forward to that! Good advise about practising the kneeling/sitting/standing I have been reloading a ton so I have plenty of ammo to burn...
