Weatherby Vaguard Series 2

cabelas lists them........ vanguard 2 ss for 679.00 ...they make a good rifle for the money had a coupleof them over the years.. sold them and moved on no disapointments accuracy was always good may try the van 2 myshelf
 
I'm pleased that they are bringing back the stainless models, adding a 3-position safety, and updating the triggers. I'm even more excited to learn that you can get the base model in .240 Weatherby! I would love to be able to have a wood stocked .240 Wby. Does anybody know if the first gen stocks will fit?

I'd also like to see a light weight stock with the fluted barrel (stainless or blued) option again like the previous 'Back-Country' version. I missed out buying one before they were discontinued.

And I know it'd be too much to ask, but I'd love to see the full line of 'small' magnums (from .224 to .340) available. I can understand the .378 - .460 not being available, but there's not any good reasons to not have the others available.

Yup. I am thinking about it, and I even have someone that can teach me in town, he is a benchrest shooter and loads his own 308 cartridges, and he knows what he is doing. Just gotta convince the misses that it is a great idea to turn our storage/messy room into my shop for various projects. :)

Already had a Howa 1500 in 308 win and loved that gun, the S2 seems like a slightly pimped up version. Want one in 308 or 7mm 08...

Glad to hear Cabelas have them, I havent been on their webpage for a while, but last time I checked there were no Vanguard S2's there...:confused:
 
Don't get exited yet. When was the last time (In recent years) a new American rifle topped the previous generation of the same class/price gun? Nowadays, "cheaper and cheaper quality" is the name of the game.

In all fairness, Marlin X7 series was an OK gun, but other than that...

Have you worked with both the new and old rifle?

I did the load development for my friends old vanguard in 257 wby and my new one in 7mm rem mag this year. The new gun is better. Plain and simple.
 
What I said was not directed at any specific gun, but an expression of my contempt for the new cost cutting practices of the gun industry, as a whole.

I hope you are right regarding the new gun being better. That would be a welcome change.

The marketing hype is the other difference.
There are those that like the gun and those that dont.
Those that know are happy and successful with their gun and those that dont are happy .
Go figure.

Just pull the trigger on an Axis and then on an X7. Then consider the cost/effort of getting the Axis to the same place.
I will readily admit that compared to 20 years ago there are not many buys as good as that out there with either of those two, especially if you don't mind a few potential tweaks like floating, trigger work. And they leave nothing to want for in the accuracy department. The Vanguards are a great rifle too but not in the same cost category.
 
Hey guys, check my post. I have two earlier Vanguard synthetics and have a troubling problem with my casings. I'm going to have a gunsmith check them out, but so far, they are surprisingly troubling.
 
Having handled (but not worked with) both a late build Vanguard and a S2, I'd say the S2 feels way better. By all accounts, it also shoots better (probably in good part due to the trigger). The new stock feels real nice.
Local dealer has a bunch in stock, but not why I'm looking for - they wanted me to buy one in .257 Wby. Mag. Tempting.
 
I've compared old vanguard, new S2, and other similar priced rifles side by side and fired as well.

S2 same basic feel as the old model but the stock is nicer by feel but not necessarily function. Both are well designed IMHO. The new stock does seem to be stiffer and does not have that greasy feel of the plastic used on the old ones.

Trigger S2 wins hands down although not as good as an axis with a rifle basix trigger intalled that I had.

Accuracy. Hell everything out there gives 1" plus or minus and I'm just not the sniper expert required to really test it. I'll leave that to others.

Compared to similar savage rifles my pick is the weatherby. It just seems better built and the stock is miles agead of standard savage tupperware.

I have a TC venture and Id rate it equal with a slightly better trigger.

The jury is out on the new finish on the barrel ( Blued model ) I don't know if I like it or not but it is definitely different from basic bluing.

For the sub $600 rifles I have owned ( New out of box )

1) S2 tied with the TC venture
2) Vanguard ( old style)
3) Savage
4) Stevens 200
5) Axis

Owned a few rems and others but they were above that price point so I won't include them.



Cabelas had a decent price on the S2 models and I managed to snag the last
7 08 they had.
