thoughts on ruger 44 carbine

I carry a Ruger .44. Have tested it at different ranges out to 100 yards, just to understand what happens to the point of impact at different ranges. 50-75-100. There is no way that a hold along the back would result in a groove in the ground miss under a deer at 80.

What I don't understand (at all) is exactly how you shot UNDER the deer?

Me too.

I have it sighted in at 50 yds..

Um yup...

Your lobbing rounds at a 100 yd target..

Ummm nope.

It's a 44, not Shot put.

I missed a deer this year standing at about 80 yds distant out of a tree stand. I put the dot on the top of the deer above the shoulder, the 240 gr. passed cleanly under the deer and plowed a little trench through leaves and dirt..

It's a simple miss...That happens...But it wasn't excessive bullet drop that caused this one.

Point is the Ruger 44 semi is a great little gun. But she's a 50 yd set up unless your well practiced at the hold over for longer ranges which I was not.

Umm nope....

No hold over required at 100 at all...

My biggest issue with the 44 is how slow the bullet is...I practiced at 50yds on a running deer target and my bullet hit about 3'' back from the point of aim. I figure about 6''-7'' at 100yds. This is where proper lead becomes crucial on a moving target..I did become very good at guestimating, but it is very easy to be wrong on your yardage without a second to think, and what should be a good shot, could turn into a bad one...This is the main reason I switched to mainly a 25-06, and 280...Less guessing for me anyway.

Although I really love the look of the ruger semi auto, there are limitations to using the ruger 44 mag, i.e. range and jamming, and scarcity/cost of the detach. mag version.
I have a remington pump 7600 in 308 with a short barrel and a leupold 3-9 lightweight scope, and so I could never justify the ruger. The 7600 weighs about 7 lbs with scope and is very handy. It also has a much better range and doesn't jam. Didn't cost a whole lot... got it on CGN a few months ago.
But, have never owned the ruger, so YMMV.

Don't you just love people that declare a gun a jammer yet admit to never having owned one

When it comes to dogging, ask yourself... Are you intersted in a gun that's nice & comfy to take for a walk, or are you interested in a gun that's most effective in getting you a deer?

Shot a doe 6 time with a ruger 44 and then stabbed it to death. Not goin there ever again.Didn,t get the penatration I thought I would.Loaded it with H110 powder and 240 grain bullets.Could hit a the bottom of a timmys cup every time at a 100 yards too.Just not enough womp for me.My 358 is way better rig or my 20 gauge

I pounded that deer in the vitals at under 30 yards and then put it out of its missery with my knife.Killed over 50 deer with guns and bows and loved playin with that 44 semi, but not for deer.Theres a reson the 30-06 is the most popular cal in north american deer woods.12 gauge with buckshot would be way better choice

LOL....yet I've shot over 40 animals, many of them bear...and many of them BIG (way bigger than any doe)....and can count on three fingers the # of times a follow up shot was used.....but you shot 175 pound animal SIX times, IN the vitals, at 30 yards, with a .44 mag....and it didn't kill the deer????

I can't tell if you are joking or full of s**t, but it's one or the other.

And for the record: buckshot is NEVER "way better"...period. Buckshot is a coyote round at best. I love how in one breath you can say that 6 .44's in the vitals wouldn't do the job, but somehow 8 .25's shot in a random pattern would be a better choice.....????

It's certainly deep in here.

Somethings way wrong here. A 44 cal bullet out of my muzzle loader never fails to drop a deer or get good penetration.

Is it possible you loaded it a little too light?
