338 Federal

338 Federal barrel length

Whats your barrel length I ask because the -M's are coming with 18.6" barrels...

Hey guys - I'm building a 338 federal on a 1st gen rem 700ti. I see most factory 338 federals come with a 22 inch tube, but I've got a friend who built one with a 19 inch barrel. What are your guys thoughts for a hunting rifle - I think 21 or 22 should be just about right to maximize performance. Anyone out there with any experience with this?

Cheers,
C.

I would go 22" if you are going to be shooting any distance, but I don't know where you are hunting and what type of terrain. I built one with a 20" bbl on a Rem 760, but was meant for close shooting in thick bush.

Comes down to balance more than anything. What barrel contour? Ti stock?

I do like the 308 based cartridges, but I have wondered why one would chose a short cartridge as the 338 F in a long action when there is the 30-06. Their are many short action rifles better suited to the 308 based rounds.
Just a question...

?? - I'm building a 338 Federal on a SA rem 700 currently a 308 win. Not sure what you are asking?

That's what I was referring to. The Tikka is a long action, why would you not wants a 30-06 based cartridge. I realize that the older Winchester model 70's both pre and post 64's were all based on one action but with present CNC machining it would take very little to produce a short action Tikka. I'm sure Sako has the ability within their manufacturing processes.

My Sako Grey Wolf had a 22.5" pipe. It was great in heavy brush, but if it was 21" with a lightweight stock that helped it balance properly I always thought it'd be the cats azz. Your Ti stock (or edge) would balance a 21" .338 barrel ok if it was a sporter contour. Make the pipe a 10 twist then you can shoot whatever weight of bullets you want :) . Though the 185 TTSX certainly is a good bullet to base a .338F build around.

I have a Tikka t3 in 222 :D I just pretend it's a 300 Wby Mag when working the bolt

Nice - thanks for the advice on barrel length. 21'' is prob about where I'll land. But you bring up another thing I haven't figured out yet - Barrel Contour. I'll be going with a par-nor barrel. My current 308 barrel is close to their featherweight contour, but for better accuracy I'll likely step up to either a number one, or maybe a numebr two fluted.

what would your suggestions be? Turns out a number 2 fluted is actually lighter than a non-fluted #1. Really wanting to avoid ending up with an unbalanced rifle given the crazy light action...

Cheers,
C.

I cant really speak out of experience. Are you running the factroy Ti stock on it or an EDGE or something? If you're factory 22" fly weight barrel balances well then you may want to dupe the contour and run 21". Or if the #2 fluted is between their featherweight (which is close to your .308 pipe no?) and #1 non-fluted weights, then perhaps the #2 fluted will work quite well?

I'd just go with a 21" #2, no flutes. Or have them copy the Rem Sporter contour for you.
Certainly cant rag on a Rem Sporter contour also.
