After accessorizing my AR for the last 3 yrs (putting stuff on, taking stuff off, etc) it still didn't "talk" to me so I ended up selling it. The AR bug was still in me and after searching I found one with "soul". It felt right as soon as I picked it up.

Here's some pics of my "new" Colt SP1 AR15 20"bbl. At least it was "new" in 1971ish...
At ~6lbs it's refreshingly light!

Great condition considering it's 40 years old. Obviously, not a lot of rounds through it. Do you plan on shooting it much or keeping it in the same condition it is now for collection purposes?

If it were me, I'd keep that one for a collector, buy another well used one in lesser condition and use it as a regular shooter. AR's are like Pringles aren't they? ;)

Thanks Guys!

I've been developing an appreciation for the "retro/older" stuff lately. When I pick one up I could almost feel the history & nostalgia oozing out of it.
2bad4u2, although the rifle is in VG condition I do plan on taking it out to the range and shooting it.
AlesD92, I don't plan on accessorizing it (been there done that). Just want to KISS it!

Nice looking SP1 :) Does it have a slick-side bolt carrier?

I've seen some of these retro'd with the early changing handle, chrome plated BCG, etc. They really end up looking great.

Thanks. I've seen the "triangle" charging handle. Looks Kool but I'm not sure if it's time correct for a '71.
Don't know what a slick-side BC is but here's a couple more pics that may determine if it is.....

...did a search on the net and found the "triangle" charging handle and the "slick-side" BC with chrome bolt. Both were pre-'71.

Makes me wonder why my BC has the serrations on the side even though my rifle doesn't have the forward assist.....hmmmm

Very nice.

I even got an earlier one but sadly its lacking the correct lower. The barrel markings are on the bottom on mine which brings it 66-67 is when Colt moved the markings on top of the barrel.

Its shoots like a dream.

What did you pay for it? If you don't mind me asking. I would seriously consider tracking one down if it was within my means.

I've been looking for one but never seriously enough until I saw one (this one) in person and fondled it.
It looked clean and appeared to have been shot little so I happily handed over $950+HST to the LGS:D

That is a great looking Colt!

I have pretty much gone the same direction. I had a Colt 6920 for years that was my go to gun. It had the usual assortment of 'upgrades' hanging off it. It managed to stay as my primary AR among a goodly number of other AR platforms that have passed through my hands over the past several years.

I am now down to just a Colt Sp1 ;).

It is hands down my favourite. Mine has some honest service use wear being an ex-service rifle. I have done some minor cosmetic (stocks) changes to it, otherwise it is stock which is just how I like.
