The .375 Ruger discussion thread

accubond performance

My son used the .375 Ruger in SA last fall and took 12 animals from warthog to eland and from 30 yds to over 400 yds. Performance was exceptional. Only flaw in his rigging was his 1.5 - 5 leupold scope which had the heavy duplex and it handicapped him a little on some of the longer shots. The bullets perfomed amasing, very few recovered. I use the 270 TSX in the H+H with almost no recovered bullets through and through every time, dead critter everytime!!

I'm waiting for my 375 Ruger Alaskan to show up next week.

Does anyone know where I can buy some ammo ?

And this is why I have not jumped on the 375 Ruger bandwagon. If your ammo ends up somewhere else, how do you source more to save a hunt? As others have said, the 375 Ruger shows LOTS of promise, but in the same breath, we have seen many many calibers come & go recently... The WSSM's immediately come to mind...

Personally, I am hoping to read about the 375 Ruger years down the road & possibly own one... Given the situation where I would have to make a choice right now, I think I would take the 375 H&H...

Cheers

Where do you guys live that it is so hard to find ammo? Even La baron's here is South Eastern Ontario usually has a couple loads available, and we have no practical use in this area for a cartridge this powerful except for maybe an overly aggressive refrigerator. :p

Thanks Jay, that was the response I was looking for.

I did some research before buying the rifle.

Living halfway between Prince Rupert and Prince George on Hwy.#16, there are 8 different places to buy ammo not counting C-Tire. Of the 8 places 4 currently have 375 Ruger ammo on the shelf and 7 regularly carry the ammo. Only 3 of the stores currently have 375H&H in stock.

Keep in mind that it's the middle of winter, hunting season is long since past and going to the range in -15 with 3' of snow isn't a really good time to most people. So ammo in all shops is low, with no plans to re-order until spring.

Seems to me that ammo for the NEW KING is readily available in NW B.C. and for what I do and where I do it this 375Ruger Alaskan will be perfect!

I'm not much of a "gun guy" but this cartridge just makes sense to me, and Ruger, Savage, CZ.....I think I'm missing someone else....

I can't wait for the spring bear hunt !

the cartridge is only 4 years old and is a not a cartridge to many people have a need for so it will take a bit longer to catch on, but it will. the .375 h&h has been around for 99 years so that is why it is easier to find ammo for it.

Ruger / H+H

I KNOW I can buy 308, 30-06, 300 Win,.375 H+H, 458 Win and .470 NE in Capetown, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bulawayo, Harare, Lusaka, Maun, Victoria Falls, Joburg, Gabarone, Nirobi, Dar es Saalm, Mombassa and quite likely even Livingston if I need to salvage a very expensive hunt because some airline Moron lost my bag or stole my ammo. I quite frankly would be very surprized to see the Ruger offering in even one of these cities for some years to come.
Same reason not advised to use wildcats as a primary rifle/cartridge combo when travelling abroad. I have and lucked out but never will again as things get tougher and more bags disappear and headstamps must match whats on the barrel.

Gentlemen;

I do not wish to burst your bubble or dampen your enthusiasm, however you apparently need a history lesson. The .375 H+H came out in 1912 and accounts for more firearms chambered in this caliber, every year, than all other calibers combined with a .33 bore or larger.
I do not wish to detract from the outstanding .375 Ruger, it is obviously a most efficient cartridge, but please, the new KING of .375. It's diapers haven't even had their first change. REMEMBER the .375 Wby or .378 WBY both going to make the H+H obsolete, didn't happen. Then there was the .358 STA going to make the H+H obsolete, didn't happen, how about the .375 RUM and so on and so on and so on !!!!
Do you honestly believe that if Ruger went broke tomorrow that any other manufacturer would pick up the .375 Ruger, I think not!! Isn't this REALLY the final test as to the worth of a cartridge?
I hunted last fall in Africa with a .375 H+H and my son hunted with a Ruger African in .375 Ruger. He used 260 gn Accubonds and I used 270 gn TSX.
We were both highly successfull and neither one of us lost any animals, great hunts!!! Please save your hyperbole on the .375 Ruger for 20+ years then tell me it's the KING, at best right now it's an illegitimate queen compared to the H+H.
This of course is only my opinion, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that I have fired more shells from .375 bore and up, than most who opine on this site and I'll pretty much guarantee that I have killed more animals in more places on this planet than nearly all of you.
As I said before it's only my opinion!!

Long Live the 375 H&H ! The real KING ! :D

that's only a problem if you go hunting in africa, if you bought 50 brass and reloading dies your good to go for a long time unless you like target shooting with a .375  . if you use it for hunting i can't see shooting it to often.

.375 Ruger

Gentlemen;

Please do not misinterpret what I'm saying. I think the .375 Ruger is one of the finest designs to come out in the past 50 years, a totally new case fitting a standard magnum bolt face. Superior to the Jeffery derivatives in that manner, a case capacity exceeding the H+H in an action needing to only be long enough to function a .300 Win. From what I have seen and the loads my son has worked up, it is a excellent cartridge, outstanding even. I fully intend to build 3 rifles based on this case, a .375, the .416 and a .458. I expect to be able to match the .458 Lott with this case in a lighter action and rifle.
My objection is the use of the term KING implying this cartridge to be the end all, be all, in a .375 bore. The H+H is still the industry standard and will be 100 years old in a few days, it has been chambered every year since 1912 in several models of firearms (except possibly during war years) and it still kills as well today as it did 100 years ago. A little respect for the old girl is all I ask, the Ruger will get it's due in good time, but it needs to earn it on the game fields all over the world as the H+H has.
The Ruger ballistically duplicates the old .375 Wby, which was highly touted when Roy brought it on the scene, however it died a very quick death and didn't seem to hurt sales of the rifles in the H+H one bit. Many ballistically superior cartridges have come and gone over the past 100 years and yet the old H+H plods along, you need to ask why and do a little research. It has to do with feeding, percieved recoil, worldwide availability of ammo and the fact it is just a damn good cartridge that's loved by a lot of old guys like me, who buy guns.
Lets just give the Ruger a chance to grow up and fill out a bit before we start the coronation process OKay. That's all I ask !!

There's only one person who uses the term "New King" here.
Please disregard them so that we can focus on reloading and such.

Edit: ####e there's more than one I guess.

King

sorry Dougie, you're wrong. The 375 Ruger is the new king of 375 cartridges

Opinions make the world go round, and I give you the respect of honoring yours. So be it !! Apparently history and logic are lost on you, I will not address this any longer, except to say history is full of a lot of dead infant kings !!!

Douglas
PS: I will ignore the "Dougie" slight.

Not only is it opinion, it is fact that the 375 Ruger is the new king of the 375 caliber cartridges. It may not be the fastest or the oldest, but it's the king.
