10/22 Project Guns

Easy bud, no need to get mad with me, i didnt make these rules, im still new to guns, i had no idea how crazy you guys had it with all these rules, and now that i do it fires me up, im a take action kind of guy, and now i feel helples. Wasnt trying to change any rules over night, trying to learn as much as i can.

Listen, I don't mean to sound rude, but there is this really cool thread in the rimfire section where a member is showcasing his talents of turning his 10/22s into replicas of some of histories greatest guns. He is encouraging others to share their projects and stimulate discussion of same....

with pleasure, great forum.

Well, today is a day off so I finally have a couple hours to myself. Finished the trigger, just have to make up a piece to finish off the trigger housing.

Crude as all get out, I probably don't have to worry about the ghost of John Browning bugging me to come work for him! The important thing is that it works:

If my youngest cooperates and doesn't drive his mother around the bend I may actually get to take it to the range today. Cross your fingers for me.

Need to get this rifle finished cause all the fuss about the issc mk22 has given me my latest greatest idea for a project.

Well, just got back from the range. Works fine other than a mag issue with one of my bc 25 rounders. Need to tune the sights a bit, its shooting high and left. Nothing a bit of file work won't fix. This thing ain't a biathlon rifle, but so far its a lot of fun. Three army guys showed up while my son and I were there, I think they thought it was pretty funny.

My next project is an FAL clone. Anyone have a suggestion on a different rifle to build it with, or should I just stick with a 10/22?

I am not a big 10/22 fan, but for this kind of project I'm not sure why you would pick anything else with all the aftermarket support and options available for it.

Please post a thread on your build, I could really be interested in a faux FAL based on the 10/22.

I know this is a thread for the 10/22s, but I think my Mossberg 702 Plinkster project is worth sharing, since its also a rimfire and i've seen people try out this mod with a 10/22.

The donor gun is a 1:1, H&K-licensed G36c airsoft gun (made by ARES).

The original G36c cocking handle is functionnal, as it pushes back on the plinkster cocking handle.

Original g36c mag release also functionnal.

Everything is rock solid. No extra screws on the outside. No glue anywhere.

To hold the plinkster in place inside the g36c shell, i designed an aluminum block and had it machined (hard to explain without a picture). I also designed 2 locking pins to hold the magwell in place, since the original "through-and-through" pin could work anymore, as the plinkster was blocking the way.

The G36 selector switch/safety is of course just for looks, the real safety on the gun is located underneath the magwell (it is accessible without dissasembly).

Fake suppressor to hide the long barrel. Didn't like the g36 stock, swithed to an M4 adapter with UBR stock.

The g36c mag in the picture holds 10 rounds (plinkster 10-round mag fitted inside), but I just bought a 25-round mag (the one used in the mossberg tactical .22, which is the same gun as the plinkster) and fitted it inside a pmag shell.

hope you enjoy,

cheers.

Nice. Doesn't matter what base gun you use, I only said 10/22 because that's what I've used. Thanks for sharing, Let's see some more. If you don't have one, get out there and buy a rifle, start whittling and chopping.

I'd like to see someone build a sten or something German from ww2. A Bren would be sweet but it might be kind of goofy to invert the receiver. Just throwing ideas out there!

I think you should stick with the 10/22 for your next project. Great little rifle for the price and spare parts are up the whazooooo for it.

Your kit/s look amazing, I think an FAL 10/22 would be the way to go. I hope you do step by step instruction on how to make it cuz I really want to make one myself after you have accomplished it.

 and good luck!!!!!

Will do. Right now just trying to sort out what I need for the new one. Don't know anything about them, hope I don't have to fab too much. I'd like it to look as authentic as possible (obviously), but scratch building a complete "receiver" for something like this is probably beyond my capabilities.

Well, first parts showed up yesterday. Century stock set, and a complete Indian rifle (less barrel and prohibited bits) on the way in the next week or so, thanks to helpful cgn members.

Now I need to find a 10/22 receiver and barrel. I think I'm going with a heavy barrel around 16" for this one, and probably piece this one together rather than buying a complete donor rifle. Never done any internal work on a ruger, and I'm planning on making a functional left hand charging handle on this one. Should be "interesting".

FAL clone starting to come together. Pretty much just trying to figure out how to piece it together at this point, brainstorming and such. This one's going to be tricky, I want it to be solid. Need to tie the fore end and receiver/buttstock together to keep everything rigid.

So far:

Just rough positioning so I can figure out where everything needs to be and what I need to make.

Fore end was the easy part. Factory 10/22 barrel with the sight base removed for the flash hider. Not sure, might eliminate that and go with a heavy barrel.

This is the big stumbling block. Gotta chop up the donor receiver to set the Ruger trigger assembly in place, then fill in the receiver and tie the whole thing together.

Wish there was a Saskatoon gunnut/machinist that could help me make up a whole aluminum one piece unit.

Nice, I can empathize with chopping up the donor. It's tough, but I'm confident the end result will be worth it. I really enjoy watching the process of other peoples scratch builds and will be following it with interest.

Making a bit of progress... took the plunge and chopped the receiver. Now I'm building the sides with some new plate material, and sandwiching the Ruger receiver between them. The "receiver" will be fastened to the Ruger via two chicago screws through the body. Its rough now, but now that the fitting is done I can shape the side plates to mimic the FN shape. This won't be 100% accurate down to the last detail, but more smoothed out. I fastened the fore end with a strap welded to the handguard collar (probably incorrect term) and screwed to the top of the Ruger receiver at the rail mounting points. I also ran a 3/8" rod full length from the top of the receiver at the rear sight to the front sight. This gives the entire rifle lots of rigidity, and is hidden by the handguard and the future rail cover for the receiver.

Another teaser pic:

Rough shaped side plates, and drilled the Ruger receiver to allow bolts to pass through. Bolts replace pins holding trigger assembly in receiver. That was dicey, wasn't sure if I was going to wreck anything. All worked out, need to shorten bolts as they are too long as is. Now to weld side plates to donor receiver, and fab up mag well.

Ok, I'm gonna say this at the risk of getting some "try searching" responses. I need someone who makes aftermarket 10/22 receivers. This is way too bulky the way I'm doing it, a shell around the receiver doesn't cut it. I need someone who is willing to make me a complete new milled receiver that mimics the dimensions of an FAL. I know it would be a big hunk of aluminum and that it would be expensive to do. Don't care, I need this to happen. If you can do this, or know who can, let me know. I can provide dimensions needed.
