Robinson XCR or a VZ-858. way I see it, the VZ wins big on price especially when you consider sights and grips and other dodads. From reviews the XCR is more accurate, softer shooting and more refined. Reliability is probably a wash between the two. The XCR would be in 5.56. The caliber changability isn't something I'm interested to thats a non factor.

Thoughts, opinions, unintelligible ramblings?

i need to buy myself a christmas gift and final

between these two.. please thanks

CZ858 is a proven military platform that can take a beating and won't fall apart even under the toughest use. From what I hear/read, mileage with the XCR can vary... it is basically an AR-15 alternative for those of us living in countries with retarded gun control laws, but does not appear to be anything extraordinary (Americans don't seem to like them much, by the way... and sales aren't that good down there).

That said, I too wanted to get me an XCR at one point not too long ago... then I did some reading (reviews, etc) and ended up getting a non-res CSA Vz58 in .223 Remington instead (at less than half the price). CSA's Vz-58's are like CZ858's, but with all little upgrades already in them (tabbed bolt carrier, better fit and finish, black synthetic stocks, etc).

It is the best of both worlds, plus many of them can now accept LAR/AR-15 mags with the CSA adapter (mine unfortunately can't, because it is an early model and needs "extra machining" of the mag well, supposedly... something CSA claims they will pay for. We'll see if they are true to their word).

762, where Abouts did you find a non restricted CSA Vz58 in .223? Iv been looking all over online and I can only find the restricted Vz58 with collapseable stock. I need a rifle that shoots .223 and is non restricted. Right now my thought was an mini 14 but a CSA Vz could be a fun alternative

I have just this to say about the cz 858..... I recentrly purchase a ds rfb and its by far my favrite rifle it shoot like a dream and is really accurate... but if shtf il probably grab my cz 858

I would grab my rfb as back up do. But you can tape to 30 rounder togetter, you can top load with stripper clip takes about 7 second to feild strip..... its so relyable it might even fire with out bullets ;-) lol

I like the XCR but not it's price. When you factor in hundreds of dollars of loctite to keep it together (just kidding blaxsun) the XCR gets even more costly. I do like the fact that it takes AR type mags thus can put 10rds in the LAR type mags legally but that's the only reason I'd own one.

I'd go with the 858/58. I own an 858 and it's a lot of fun.

Wolverine has them listed.

To the OP: your in the black rifle forum and the concensus is the (red rifle) 858. That should say a lot.

CZ858 has one major shortcoming: no reliable way to install a regular scope. It's not designed for that. That being said, it was never meant to be sniper rifle. It works really well with iron sights and if you put a NEA type front guard on, you can install all sorts of optics that are designed for long eye relief. I own one and it's a reliable work horse with decent accuracy for what it is. A huge bonus is the cheap ammo you can buy for it.

I don't know much about the XCR. My friend has one and he loves it. Yes, you have to lock-tie it and apparently it destroys brass but, his is really accurate and has had no reliability issues with it.

I've considered getting one briefly but, I think I'll end up going with the AR platform, even though it's Restricted where as the XCR is Non Restricted.

With the new monolithic upper AR from NEA coming soon, I know what I'm saving my cash for.

If you can, get out and see them both perform. Find out which you like better, and jump in with both feet. They are two very different rifles in two very different calibres.

We normally have at least one of each at the 100-500m service rifle matches in Calgary.

I don't post much but I figured I would share my opinion.

I have never fired the XCR, but I just purchased a CSA VZ58 (5.56 NATO non restricted) and I love it. Shoots great, fairly accurate (especially for the price of it! and i only shoot dirt cheap AE .223 rounds). I have not had a single jam, or single problem with it yet other than the wooden stock feeling "loose". I have replaced it with some fab defence stuff and it is much nicer fit, thought I kinda feel in love with the wood look.

I also just installed a AK side mount scope rail + a marstar SKS shell deflector and it works perfect with any optics than. I might ditch the shell deflector soon (get my rear sights back) and install a shorter pistol scope so i have both scope and sights.

Hope that helps!

How I feel is, i can spend all the money on the XCR, or I can spend the money on a VZ-58 and still have enough left to get a real black gun (Norinco M4) for range only use.

Wanstall's. Came with a scope rail factory mounted too.

:D

Since I got my 858 I have tried to test it because of everything that is said about it... This thing is almost as good if not better than AK!!!!! I love it:ar15:
