Are 760s side drilled from factory for sidemount peeps??
Mine is, but I don't know if it's factory.
I'm gonna try a sidemount peep if I can find one?
I want to see if I can get repeatable accuracy when mounting & removeing a scope from the weaver bases.
At present I use two guns for white-tails.
One peeped gun for dogging & chase watches & one scoped for stand watchs, & low light conditions, thinkin I might be able to combine the two if zero remains close enough for hunting when I pop the scope on & off :confused:
 
Haven't seen any 760 that was side tapped. The peeps normally used fit on top using the rear scope mount holes.
 
The Williams WGRS series work best for me. Depending on how old your 760 is you may not have to go with a higher front sight. This sight would not facilitate removal and scope replacement option without messing with alot of little screws. My nephew has good luck in all conditions with low power variables on his 7600 rifle.

At our WMU 47 camp, we run drives with hounds and I do A LOT of the dogging. Like you, several years ago I decided I wanted one gun, both for dogging and for being on a stand. That gun is a Rem 760 .308 topped of with a 1.5-4.5x scope.

The scope is attached with Leopold QD (quick detach) rings on top of a Weaver base and my range tests showed it to return to zero every time. But in all honesty I have never needed to take the scope off, even when dogging. Not sure if a side-mount peep and a Weaver base can be accommodated at the same time.

I’ve dogged with buckhorn sights and peep sights, but I find a scope set at 1.5x hard to beat when it comes to speed of target acquisition, even up close in thick bush. No need to line up front and rear sights; just get the crosshairs on the vitals (or in some cases just in front of the vitals, but ALWAYS fur!).

I must admit that the scoped gun is not quite as handy for carrying when I'm dogging through the bush. But I am more interested in shooting deer than I am in taking a gun for a nice walk.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing iron sights. Some hunters can shoot the nuts off a gnat with their irons, but I’m not one of them. A large part of that is the fact that my eyes are entering their 5th decade and my irons don’t look as sharp as they used to. I simply know that I shoot better with a scope.

99% of the time my scope is parked at 1.5x and I've used it to shoot everything from running deer at 15 yards to a deer that was 150 yards across a beaver pond (cranked up the scope for that one!).
 
Thanks for opinions but want to try diff route.
Just removed & sold a 1.5x4 3200 Bush, I just didn't like that scope especially since my fav gun wears a Burris 1.5x5 which I just love.
It appears Wialliams side mount is my only option as long as since the holes are not factory, I can only hope they are drilled correct. I can see marks from a previous peep base, wish it was still on it.

madtrapper143: I have that site on my M-100 & mounted a number for guys with 760-740-7600 Rems & they really work good but I want to leave the scope base holes open so I can leave the base on & slip the scope on & off as I like. Drawback of that peep is it almost always requires a tall front, where-as in many cases the FP series doesn't.

Senior, I believe they were drilled and tapped for side mounts from the factory. I had a mid 70's 760 in 308 and if memory serves me well, I believe it was factory drilled and tapped for a side mount reciever sight. Recently picked up a 1980/81 vintage 760 in 270 and it defintely is not. If Supercub chimes in here he could likely provide the answer.

The original 760 Gamemasters were all D&T'd on the side as the gun was not D&T'd on top for scope mounting, I have my original first year production 270 Rem 760 Gamemaster in front of me, back in the day a buckhorn rear was normal, and if you wanted to improve your accuracy , you went out and got yourself a Lyman side mount peep, but if you could not afford a Lyman or Redfield, then a Williams would do.

Senior you should have no trouble ordering a Williams for any dealer in Canada, and if you look closley, once in awhile a Lyman all steel peep shows up on the EE here, good luck, Dale Z !

X2, have never seen any reference to side D&T.

The Model 760 ADL "Deluxe" and BDL "Deluxe Special" grades were first offered in June 1953, with both featuring high-comb, checkered stocks, receivers drilled and tapped for scope mounts and receiver sights.

760s are not factory side mount drilled.

Williams makes a sidemount click adjustable receiver sight [FP-740AP] that requires drilling two holes. I've used one and they work a lot better than the top mount friction adjusted ones.

No problem. I would say yours is done correctly. It was not a big deal to get one done at the time.
I have a small collection of the 760/7600 , I find as right hander shooting left due to eye dominance they work perfect foir me.
