What did I do to my SVT 40?

I did a full strip of my SVT 40 for the first time today. The metal piece you have to push to get the trigger group out I've seen video of people removing them with a cartridge. I used a brass punch and pushed on it and it wouldn't budge. I figured it was just a little stiff to I used a hammer and it took a lot of force, but the trigger group popped out. I cleaned the rifle and was putting it back together and when putting the trigger group back in I could not make the metal piece budge the other way. I again used a punch and hammer and it moved back enough to hold the trigger group in, but is still probably 1/16th of an inch away from seating with the back of the reciver. So now the little cover that you move aside will not go down. Have I screwed anything up? Why is this metal piece so damn hard to move? How do I fix it/get it back enough to flip down the cover?

When taking trigger group off the rifle, take down lever at the back of receiver has to be in 90 degrees position, or 9 o'clock. If you turn it past that you will have hard time taking off or putting trigger group back. There is no excessive force necessarry when doing this. All you need is little push on round knob thats all.

The lever was/still is in the 9 o'clock position. Now it won't move from that position. I assume because the whole sliding piece is not seated back to where it should be again.
 
When installing the trigger assembly it is easieser with the bolt and carrier out. I also have one where the circular lock did not go all the way back so I tapped it back with a soft face hammer. And all was good.
 
Fixed. Had to give the trigger group a whack from a rubber mallet, then used a soft face hammer to get the circular lock back. Anyone know why the fit is so tight I have to use hammers? It ain't my first rodeo, I can't see anything hanging up on anything or excess cosmo anywhere, it just looks like a super tight fit to me.
 
I had a similar problem when i took mine down the first time. That little cover was pushed in forward towards the rifle. At 9 oclock, In this position I couldnt get the trigger group out not matter what i tried. I just applied a small amount of force to the cover pulling it rearwards. You could feel it move but wasnt a visible amount. After that it worked perfectly.
