So I was going to buy a springfield socomII.... but then I started looking around and I want to get a Sage EBR stock.... but which rifle should I get instead of a SocomII? There are so many choices im not sure which would be best. I thought i read some where you cant use heavy barrels with the Sage, but I cant find where I found that info at. I also want to run a red dot so I was thinking about a eotech with a FTS magnifiner... thoughts on using that scope/sight? Im pretty new to the m14 platform so I could use advise of my fellow members.

Dont do it save your money. you will spend a $hit load of money, have a rifle that looks awesome, but in the end you will be disappointed with its performance. There is a reason it had the shortest military service than any other battle rifle.

Mmm can you please elaborate in what ways will I be disappointed in the performance if I may ask? Thanks!

It really depends on what kind of rifle you are building - tack driver or door kicker CQB stuff and how much do you want to spend. Don't really need a pig of a barrel on a doorkicker but for a precision stick you need stiff and minimum you need a Medium contour. Seeing how you live in the US and have access to the best M14 smiths around so building one is the way to go. Set your budget, ultimate goals for the rifle and a smith that will work with you. I've got two guys that I would use in a heartbeat

Im looking for something all around.... something good at close to medium distance. Something different from the usual AR/AK i see around here. So I thought the EBR stock'd m14 is pretty unique to my area. Do you know of any places I could just buy the barrel/action/trigger/etc separately so I dont have to buy a full rifle and ditch the stock to save a few bucks?

Being from the states, you have a plethora of options availlable to you, including being able to order a sage stock that will accept a heavy barrel. We're not so lucky up here.
You have so many options being in the U.S..
The first thing I would suggest is find a custom M14 shop in the US and work through them to have your rifle built to your specs.
And I believe that the M14 is in fact one of the longest serving firearms in the US military as it is still in service today.

Thanks for the reply! Do you have any names I can google or links to good shops?

Got deep pockets? If you want the best base to start from get yourself an LRB receiver and go from there. You can choose an M25 with the built in rail or the regular M14 receiver for conventional rails (depending on what setup you want for the Sage). Barrel I'd get an 18.5" krieger and the rest I'd source out some USGI parts from the M14forum. As for builders the top of the heap is Smith Enterprise (good ol Ron Smith has tweaking them forever!) and hes in Tempe, AZ...just down the street from you. Just call him up and tell him what you want...he'll do all the work, but it will cost you some bucks $$$$.

The other two guys I'd ask for a build:

Tim from Warbird custom guns
Ted from Tedbrown rifles

the reason it had the shortest service life in history( and i take it you mean GENERAL SERVICE, not specific duty, in which it is STILL SERVING) was STRICTLY POLITICAL, nothing to do with the rifle whatsoever- TRY READING UP ON THE EVENTS OF 1963-64- re the m16 and the adoption - the ONLY services that escaped that fiasco were the marines( to a limited degree) which still had 2 m14s to a section, and the navy-

Thanks for the info. How much do you think something like that would cost. Money is always an object IMO. Lol.

If you are in arizona periodically, I'd suggest talking to anthony at croc's (santa fe).

Minot sounds familiar - isn't that where one of them discovery channel gold chasing guys is from?

yea, it's upstream from the peg- and they get that "flood " every year- a lot of manitoba people go there as it's just across the border

Minot is also part of the huge oil boom. Good and bad times in ND, and Minot specifically. I'm not sure how much these completely custom rifles are worth but I was hoping to stick around the 3000 mark. But I've gone as high as 5000 for my ars. But I'd obviously like to spend what is needed.
