My family friend is planning on selling me some of his pistols he doesn't use anymore. I noticed a stainless colt python hiding in his collection and im interested in purchasing it because i know they arn't made anymore. How much are colt pythons worth these days?

As Dan said depends totally on condition , finish and Date of birth! Before 1960, new in box or 3 inch barrels;) etc......

Pictures and serial number would help!

so jelly... after my exams ill go check it out. If its in an acceptable condition i think ill go buy it. Any idea what to check for? I did some research and people said to make sure the cylinder doesnt have too much wobble and the spacing between the frame and end of cylinder shouldnt exceed the width of a credit card.

Anything else?

When you check cylinder movement on a Colt, do it with the trigger pulled all the way to the rear. Colts lock up slightly differently then most other revolvers. Once they are locked up with the trigger pulled back, there should be no discernable movement at all. Cylinder-barrel gap should be 0.006" or less. - dan

I am no expert, but I would say $900 on the low end and $1300 on the high end (assuming it's not in box unfored). I don't think I would pay more than $1200 personally, just my opinion.

I rarely see them cheaper than $900/$950, and the ones I have tend be monkeyed with. They are beautiful handguns, they truely are. I have a few colts, and they are real Gems, but anything over $1100 and i start to think of other REALLY awesome stuff i could buy.

If you get it, please post some pics for us Colt Fans. Cheers,

Not the same obviously but similar. What is a stainless Colt King Cobra worth. 6 in stainless in really good condition?

Different lockworks, different frame, way less handwork involved in manufacture then a Python. They are a nice revolver, but no where near in the same class. Maybe $600-700. If someone wants it, they'll pay whatever though, so maybe you'll get lucky. - dan
