Savage 99 or Browning BLR?

I was showing them on the Winchesters, my old 1892 in 44-40, the 1894 in 25-35, the now gone 94 turdy turdy and the new to me BLR 81.
The young feller has been licking his chops on the BLR 81.
Don't hate all Winchesters there gtr. ;)
I have a photo on the wall with me, me pooch sitting on my quad and low and behold in the sling shot gun rack on the rear side is a Model 88.
Deja vu to you as I was going to photo it today and stick it up here and see it you would find it.

The well liked, sought after Model 88 and this is/was the 308win.



Many moons ago and the old pup was a young pup.
This photo brings back alot of memories.
The pooch sniffed a couple moose from where she sits on the quad just a mile or
so up the road from where this photo was taken.
The hat is that from Surrey Lake resort.
The owner has just passed away a few weeks ago.
My age and it's too bad as he worked for the BC Ambulance and was a first responder.
I hope I have the first responder correct.
A higher end paramedic.
It's tragic that we lost him and will for sure miss him.

i have a 300 savage and a blr in 30-06 .

the savage is slick as glass , the blr is rather clunky .

both shoot 5 shots under a inch at 100 yards with my hand loads ...... the blr is much less finicky about what it eats .

the blr has a magazine .... and browning still makes spares for it , my savage doesn't , but some savages do have removable mags ... i don't think anyone is making new ones anymore .

will i sell either of them .... not a chance . but if i had to choose i'm keeping the savage .



i know your not looking for a bolt gun , but .....

i got to handle a savage axis a few weeks ago and was shocked how confortable it felt . it also felt very light and maneuverable.

99 or BLR?

99 all the time. Here's why:

The weight difference is inconsequential. After all, it could be as much as a whole 8 ounces.

Balance on the 99s is wonderful; on the BLR, not bad.

Great trigger on most 99s; a bit heavy on the BLR.

Bolt lockup on the 99 is incredible (see how many reviewers say it "shoots like a bolt").

Most of all: NO hammer, NO big pieces of metal coming back toward my eye. I shoot it more or less like a semiautomatic--if I have to. Very little kick (unlike some BLR's I've shot in similar calibres).

I love the rotary magazine (have 4 in different calibres), but find the box magazines in the 99C's (yup, two of those as well--243 & 308) very convenient.

One piece of advice: tang safety is much more convenient than lever safety, especially for southpaws.

Overall, I also like the look of the 99 models I own better than the BLR, although I do like the BLR much more than a lot of other non-Savage levers.
