What are the main reasons people have give the 4x4 rifles a bad name? Do the not shoot well? or is the fit and finish poor? I found one for a really good deal and all I really want it for is hunting deer and shooting holes in paper at 100 yards and the range.

Would I still be better off spending a bit more on a Savage 111 or Remington 700 sps?

Thanks

why are you so worried about what other people think? If you want it buy it, screw the haters

I had one. Could shoot under 1" groups @ 100m. They had the same style of bolt as the ATR rifles which were recalled. Simple google search should explain everything. No 4X4 rifles were recalled :) I miss it as it was a great rifle, only the bolt design scared me lol

While I appreciate the reliability and durability of the Mossberg 500 and 590 shotguns, if you gave me a 4X4 rifle, I'm not sure I could afford to say thank you. Beware of the 4X4's extractor; it appears to be delicate. In fact, beware of all bargain basement rifles. If you can't afford to purchase a quality new rifle, then purchase a quality used rifle that is in good condition.

Never held the 4x4, I have a Maverick rifle in .243. Topped it with a 100.00 redhead 4-12.
Bought it because of our experience with my wife's 12ga. field model. Rifle was 280(or thereabouts) new with bases, shoots cloverleafs at 100yds and a 350yd gong every single time. I've even turned my head while doing it. :D

IMO rifles like these and the stevens make it pretty tough to justify a big dollar hunting rifle. Let guys have their opinion, the deer won't know the difference, and if you put a scratch on it, who cares?

Thanks for the info guys. I think I should go shoulder a few before I make a decision though. Just wanted to see if anyone had any personal experience with them.

I don't know why others don't like it, other than the plastic stocked skeletonized ones being ugly. And I had one.

But mine literally did not shoot half the time, would make a small dent in the primer and nothing would happpen.

Three or four trips away on warranty bfore they just gave me my money back. Bought a Browning. Cost a lot more but much nicer and I'll never have confidence in another 4x4, so I had to switch brands.

Yes or the Marlin XL7, depends if you need the det mag or not.

I've shot my buddies Mossberg 4x4 ducks unlimited 300winmag

I found the trigger to be not that bad!!!! slick bolt and love the laminate stock. I was shooting about 1.25" at 150 yards with 180g core lokts. The scope that came with it was garbage, put a bushnell trophy 3x9 on it and it works great!

This, plus the bolts coming apart are more than enough for me to stay far away.
