Hi folks.

I am getting butten by the desure to start shooting a bit further that I currently do - the idea of accurate shooting our to 300m and, eventually, beyond appeals to my anal personality.

I have a M29 Swedish Mauser and love shooting it - at 100m with iron sights it makes me look better than I am :) I would like to get an accurate rifle in the same caliber, albeit with a scope to help my old eyes. I am set on the caliber.

I have been following the Savage v Remington debates and both will end up pricy to get me a 6.5x55. With ceracote etc. a local gunsmith has me up near $2,000 without much effort (around $700 for a Rem700SPS, about the same for a barrel swap, around $400 for the ceracoat etc.).

Cruising this site, I found a Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 for a little more than the Rem700SPS (plus shipping). Something to start with - with no need for a new barrel to start.

Any comments? I assume I will want to swap for a heavier barrel and a stock that suits me. How available are these for a Tikka T3.

And the key - is the Tikka T3 a good platform to build on? I have no pretensions that I will be very good. But I do want to try to get there.

Comments? Advice?

Thanks
Greg

Take a look at the Tikka Varmint or the Tactical. Not sure if they come in 6.5x55 but they already have the heavy barrel.

Not many options for aftermarket parts for the Tikka vs a Rem or Savage if you want to go that route down the road.

Juanvaldez had/has an already trued Rem action for sale in the EE for the same price as an SPS rifle, that would be a great start right there.

X3 for the tikka varmint. I have one in 6.5x55 all you need is a good scope and you won't have to modify the rifle at all.

Hey OP,
6.5x55 is a noble cal..
Been banging them out to past 1000yd for decades.
If $'s are short, ... grab a swede sporter, a decent scope with turrets, some 140 amax's with R22, & BR2's. Start at 45 grains, find your node, and shoot happily everafter.

If not up to snuff, grab a $100 Trade ex, M38 barrel, fit it, and enjoy 1/2 moa for the next few thousand rounds.

The .308 guys chase 6.5's, round here.

Hey vviking.

I have an M29 and M38 and they are great. Way better than I expected, especially the M29. But... both are full military stock etc. and I do not want to drill and tap them for a scope to be able to see the targets past 200 yards :) I need to go see what Anthony has in sporters. Thanks for this reminder. Interesting that all you have needed to do is think of a replacement barrel.

Thanks
Greg

Thjanks for your feedback on the tikkas folks. I have never handled one. I hear what you say about the number of aftermarket options available versus Remington & Savage.

Thanks
Greg

The tikka is a great way to go but your local guy seems high on pricing

Here is more realistic pricing

Remington
Rem sps action 450$
Installed premium barrel 560$
Boyd's laminate stock 150$
Gunkote barrel 80$
Bottom metal 80$

Savage
Package Gun 400$
Timney trigger 110$
Premium barrel installed 440$
Gunkote barrel 80$
Bt bolt knob 30$
Boyd's stock 150$

You can make that cheaper as well, use cm match bbl at 350$, use factory stock, etc
Savage
Bottom metal 80$
