.500 S&W Magnum vs. .50 Action Express

I've fired the BFR in a .460 S&W Mag, and it comes back at you hard and very fast. Doesn't hurt your hand as much as your wrist. I can only imagine the 500!

The S&W 500 isn't all that bad in their revolvers, but definitely not for extended plinking. Weight of the gun, recoil, and cost of ammo all work against you in that respect.

Like I said before the S&W .460 V in a 5 inch barrel is a great option. I have shot them all, and it would be my choice. That is if we can still get the 5 inch barrels. I know Kodiak Outpost was successful getting them in before, but who knows now.

My chopped 6" BFR in 45-70 is a handful with hotter loading but nothing dangerous. With mild trapdoor loads it's a pussycat.

That said, a hot 500S&W is a different beast compared to a 45-70. The Phoenix Range here took a 500S&W BFR out of the range rental rotation. Was too much for most people coming in.

I am a buyer for your BFR 6 INCH ..WAITING FOR YOUR NEW.;)

Not delay TOO

SOL :D

I shot a 500 S&W last week, it hurts with factory loaded ammo. It is way overkill for a hand gun, the guy that designed this cartridge needs help.

I have one on order and can't wait to get it!

Very nice bullets, I like 'em all 'cept the Keith one, the nose looks too long and is not supported by rifling like the noses on the other bullets. The 700grainer has a different nose profile then my LBT designed 700.

i've had the pleasure to shoot both in the same sitting.

.50ae is a god damn cupcake that i could shoot all day compared to that .500!

vs

there is a huge difference between these beast, the major being one firearm has a slide to suck up the recoil, the other its all coming at you.

I'm a small guy and i freakin love .50's!!!
lol!!!

Hi group,

Some good information on this thread...thanks :)

Question with regard to power:

So I can get a better understanding of the power of these S&W 500, what level of body armour with full metal jacket cartridges could each of these go through?

*Bullet Weight* *Velocity* *Energy*

(1) 300 gr (19 g) 2,075 ft/s (632 m/s) 2,868 ft·lbf (3,888 J)

(2) 350 gr (23 g) 1,975 ft/s (602 m/s) 3,031 ft·lbf (4,109 J)

(3) 400 gr (26 g) 1,800 ft/s (550 m/s) 2,877 ft·lbf (3,901 J)

(4) 500 gr (32 g) 1,500 ft/s (460 m/s) 2,500 ft·lbf (3,400 J)

(5) 700 gr (45 g) 1,200 ft/s (370 m/s) 2,238 ft·lbf (3,034 J)

i have a HR single shot rifle in .500 S&W MAG, love the caliber now:D, tons of fun for reactive targets such as water jugs/used electronics/etc....:D

ammo is EXPENSIVE tho $60 for 20 rounds of hornady...i plan to get dies for it and reload when i get 100 brass of so.

Lol a box of ammo is a 1/5 the price of the gun. That's gotta up the fun factor knowing that. I gotta buy one

When I bought a 500S&W didn't even bother getting a box of ammo to shoot and use the brass. Went right for the reloading components. I think the 500S&W recovers the costs of reloading the quickest. This caliber will put you in the poor house quick if your wrists will handle it ;)
