custom Painting AR's

hey guys, any tips on painting an AR?

I think the plastic bits should be pretty much the same as painting a carbon fiber car,
but should I use a specific paint made for the aluminum(right?) alloy that makes up teh upper/lower, or am I still good with a good auto airbrush type set up?

I use naphta to degrease, you don't have to do it outside like the awfully smelly brake cleaner... that stuff is nasty.

Anodized aluminium and parked steel (both porous) are very good hosts for spray paint. A lot of people use Krylon camo paint and get very good results.

ok thanks guys, I am not doing camo pattern stuff tho, think more custom bike paint (you know flames skulls canadian flag) type art as opposed to camo, but yeah, looks like I can use the same type of base coat and paint over it much like I would motorbike/car

Ever heard of Cobra Imaging???
Get it dipped to what ever flavor you want and then they apply a clear coat to ensure it never comes off. I would deffinatly check them out before you break out the air brush.

Anything fine detailed comes out awsome,I have handled/ seen some of their work and its pretty awsome.

I'm a big fan of Duracoat. I did a Norc M-4 in Colt Grey and it looks fantastic. I sandblasted the BBQ paint that Norinco put on it, degreased it and sprayed on the Duracoat.

You wouldn't want the bill though. I sent a Mapul PRS stock, 1 grip, 1 pmag, and a tube type handguard to Cobra to be dipped....bill was $340. It is not very durable. For about $500 I could have had ATR or someone else Cerekote the whole rifle.....what a waste of money.

No problem with your work at all. It was the first hydrodipping I've had done, I just do not think I would go that route with rifle parts again....other stuff yes. Like I said nothing wrong with the work, I just should have spent a little more money and went for a more durable finish.

Simpleton, I am glad to hear you had no issues with the quality of our work; however I am still concern about the durability issue you raised. Our customers include both manufacturers and resellers of firearms and firearm accessories as well as professional outfitters that use their firearms daily for work. One of the reasons they repeatedly use our service is because of the durability of our finishes. Perhaps there is an issue with your project and if so we would certainly like the opportunity to correct it. Easysauce, I apologize for intruding into your thread. If you decide to paint your firearm yourself one of the critical things you need to do is degrease any bare metal, especially aluminum as it is a porous material that absorbs cutting oils which can cause lifting of your paint. Plastic also absorbs releasing agents and it too needs to be degreased. Give it a good wash with grease fighting dish soap to remove anything that may affect the adhesion to the plastic.
