257 Roberts Winchester fwt

I'd get it Ackley improved then it's really biting pn 25-06 performance in a tight little package. Not very expensive and one of the few "improvings" worth doing.

I have never had the desire to Ackley Improve my .257 Roberts, as I find the performance is fine as it is. If I truly wanted another 50-75 fps then I would buy a .25-06, which was not an option when the .257 AI was developed.
Mine is a push feed with the blocked magazine. The throat length was never the governing factor; the magazine length was. Nevertheless I have loaded many types of long bullets without a problem. They are deep seated, but that does not create the pressure problems of the myths.
I shoot 117 -120 grain bullets around 2850 fps and 100 grain bullets around 3000-3050. I don't have my notes to hand for the 87 grain and 75 grain bullets.
As for distance, I find that 250 yards is a long shot, but that is not due to accuracy of the rifle. It is my confidence level based on lots of practice at 100 and 200 yards. 300+ is quite far away on deer, even though I know that lots of hunters talk about 400 yard shots.

I had a M70 FWT in .257, made the first year that they came out. I'm not sure if they are still made the same way, but mine was a long action with a magazine blocked to be shorter. It also had a very short throat. It was not suitable for pointed 120 grain bullets, they could not be seated deep enough to work through the magazine and short throat. 117RN were OK but I wanted to shoot longer bullets with better BC. I had the throat lengthened and the magazine box spacer removed, and a longer follower installed. I could seat long 120 grain bullets out for 3" LOA and easily achieved 2800 FPS with IMR4350. I shot a lot of deer with 120 Nosler partitions with that rig.

yes balistic tip 100gr.

I went out yesterday and bought some BT's 100gr and also some 117gr Hornady softs.
I would be happy with 3000fps frm 100 gr bullets out of this rifle.

Thanks for all the replies everyone

Should be no problem to get 3000.i have been getting 2900 to 3000 with 100gr with no pressure signs.using Ramshot hunter, imr 4350,RL19.

I had a 700 "Classic" in 257 Roberts. The original barrel was super fussy, so I screwed it off and replaced it with 1-10" twist Shilen, 24" long.
This was a happy combo, that shot everything well.
I could get 3000+ with the 120 Partition, and it would shoot cloverleafs all day long.
The 100 grain was just as accurate, and would break 3200.
A lot of deer, a Moose and an Elk fell to that rifle, and I never shot twice at any one of them.
You'll love that chambering. Mild-mannered and effective, that's the 257 Roberts.
Regards, Eagleye.
