i just got a mosin and havent shot it yet, several people on the net compare it the 30-06 but wouldnt it be closer to the .308 since the round is 3mm longer than the .308. The 06 case is 63mm so wouldnt it be much more powerful not just a little bit? what am i missing here? is closer to a .308 or 30-06?

i looked at the ballistics table you posted and it seems like the mosin is only a hair behind the 30-06 but more powerful than 308.
 
They are all very close in performance but the 06 and 54 work better with heavier weight bullets. The .308 is a little short when you start using bullets above 180grs or so, they start to use up too much space in the short .308 case.

I totally agree with this as a reloader, the .308s have maxed out where the x54 and .06 are still shining with heavy bullets. Pressure and bullet diameter have lots to do with this as well, powder and case capacity are not the only factors involved. Having this said, the X54 and .06 also do a really good job with 150grain bullets.


The Mosin is a total buzz for hunting and shooting. With the prices of ammo and rifles, it would be silly not to jump on the market. You won't see it cheaper than what it is now.
 
I'd say it falls in between the 30-06 and the 308. It will pump out a 180gr bullet at 2700 fps where-as the 30-06 does this at about 2800 with some spare change. The .30-06 has a much better spectrum of bullets to choose from though.
 
Comrades, the round is much more powerful than the rounds of the Conservative Capitolist government! After all, only in Russia would a round from 1891 be still in use with only minor alteration! :)
 
You say potato, I say potahto. Fact is there isn't much to choose from among them and they have all withstood the test of time for the past 100+ years. The 7.62 Russ, .30-06, .303 Brit, 8x57 and 7x57 were all designed in the same general timeframe and will all produce the same results on a human or animal target if hit the same. I've never shot a game animal with a 7.62 Russ, but have taken a lot of them with the .303, .30-06, 7x57 and .308, and they all fell down about the same.

The .308/7.62 NATO will approximate .30-06 performance in a shorter case using 150-165gr bullets.

- Amazing that a cartridge from 1891 is about the most popular belt-fed machine-gun cartridge in the world today. If it works, don't fix it.
 
Indeed. Personally, I prefer rimless cases, but the 7.62X54R is just perfect for hunting the teeming wilds of Canada and Russia. I even had a few rounds from the Tsarist era that I fired off. Still worked, highly reliable!
