22 mag versus 17

I have found the 22 mag Winchester Supreme are excellent little round to shoot out of my CZ...

I also have the 17 HMR in a CZ as well and find it’s a nice little round to shoot. Have taken care of small critters around the house but much prefer the 22 mag to take care of business...
 
Anyone have any experience with the 20gr soft points in 17hmr made by Winchester? I'm wondering if the 20gr bullets have better penetration and would work on beaver for head shots.
 
I haven't shot any soft points but I have shot the Winchester 20 gr JHP and they sure do a heck of a number on small critters.

As for shooting beavers , I’ve been doing it for a few years now being that they like to plug our culverts. My preference is #4 buck shot. It’s a small target trying to take a head shoot at a swimming beaver unless they are coming straight at you or swimming away...

I have shot several with the 17 grain in the hmr not always in the head and they work just fine.
 
I have to be honest.... I have been looking for a reason to own a .17.... I can't find one... it's a niche gun.... likely great for gophers at medium range... and a range trip or two..... to me, the 22 mag is in the same boat..... so given teh choice I would go with the .17 if I wanted a gun in that niche.....
 
22 mag vs 17 mag

I have a 22 mag Anchutz 1720D with a dual stage trigger, with a Leupold 6.5 - 20 target scope. I have used Win 40 grain, CCI 30 and 40 grain, and have just tried Hornady 30 grain VMAX bullets. The gun has been glass bedded, free floated with a 2.25Lb trigger.

Groups range from 3/8" to 3'4" at 100 yards with the 4 shot clip. Have had the best luck with CCI and Hornady. Very fun gun to shoot. Hits very hard. Another advantage is that you can buy 22 mag ammo anywhere.
 
IMHO...the .17 HMR is more accurate at all ranges and flatter shooting, that's why it's such a good gopher round. For bigger varmints the .22 Mag. has an edge due to bullet weight and dia.,,,however for bigger varmints the various c.f. calibers are more effective and when reloaded, are cheaper then the rimfires, esp. when using cast bullets.

.17 HMR can speed past a .22 win Mag any day and cause just as much if not more damage. .17 is the same as .22 win mag just with a necked down case, no new technology there. AND it's a little more accurate!

Here are the velocity numbers in feet-per-second at the muzzle, 50 yards, 100 yards, 150 yards (when available), and 200 yards (when available):

.17 HMR, 17 grain V-Max = MV 2550 fps, 2380 fps at 50 yards, 1900 fps at 100 yards, 1620 fps at 150 yards, 1378 fps at 200 yards.
.17 HMR, 20 grain XTP = MV 2375 fps, 2051 fps at 50 yards, 1754 fps at 100 yards, 1492 at 150 yards, 1273 fps at 200 yards.
.22 WMR, 30 grain TNT = MV 2200 fps, 1720 fps at 50 yards, 1340 fps at 100 yards, 1080 fps at 150 yards.
.22 WMR, 40 grain JHP = MV 1910 fps, 1610 fps at 50 yards, 1350 fps at 100 yards.

From these numbers it becomes clear just how much faster the .17 HMR really is. At 100 yards the difference amounts to 550 fps between the highest velocity loads for each caliber! Clearly, the .17 HMR is the undisputed speed king.

The 17 is faster but the 22WMR hits harder.
