I am thinking about getting a .338 just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the winchester model 70 super grade?

The Supergrade weighs a bit more than the standard grades, has nicer looking wood and steel btm end metal. I've had a couple, the last one was a 30-06 that had to be returned as it was a crappy shooter. Your luck will probably be better. A little extra weight in a .338 isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The M70 is one of the best thought-out designs ever made.

I am a big fan of the .338 and also the Model 70. They can be tiring from the bench but very manageable, and it is an accurate cartridge.
If you hand load H4350 is your friend.

Also IMR4350.

Man, if we both happened to be unreasonable, argumentative people this could become epic.
I concur both IMR and Hodgdon 4350 is great in the .338.
But Hodgdon is better. :D
My three favorite bullets in the cartridge are the 210 TSX, the 225 Accubond and the 250 Hornady IL.

.338 is a super cartridge. I have one of the last New Haven CT manufactured M70s, and the fit and finish is fine, and it shoots amazing. Very accurate with Federal blue box and Winchester Accubond loads.

I'd pick up the SuperGrade, as I don't think they are made anymore in .338 WM.

I have a New Haven Model 70 in 338wm. albeit somewhat customized. It is a fine rifle, very accurate and "lucky".

From what I have seen of the new FN Model 70's their quality is very good and they shoot pretty much out of the box.

I would not hesitate to buy one in 338wm although I would pick up the SS Extreme.

I have found that H4831 under 250grain cup and core bullets work very well.

There is a Ruger RSM on the EE in .338 WM; once you consider the taxes it will probably cost you a similar amount of money, but is far superior imho. The wood will be much nicer, the quarter rib itself is worth upwards of $500 by itself - not to mention the Supergrade has no open sights. No sir, if it was me there wouldn't be a question at all - I'd get that Ruger.

Mine was a bit picky with the soda-straw Kimber barrel , but 215 gr SBT, 225 TSX shoot well, and shoot to the same 200 yard POI. Picking a different magnification lets them both shoot to the B&C crosshairs out to 500. I also have a 275 A-frame load with H1000 that thumps things. That one requires 50 yards added to the range and quitting a little sooner.

How many grains do you stuff under the 275 grain AFrame?

The 338 is a very versatile round that seems relatively easy to load for.
Some have suggested one of the 4350 powders in it.
I concur that IMR or H 4350 are both good performers in the 338, but I have personally always had better success with Reloder 19.
I am in the process if loading a few rounds with RL 17, to see how it works as well.
My pet load for practically everything for years was the 210 or 225 Partition and a big load of RL 19.

i have a super grade in 338. Its has been bedded and had the barrel channeled out. Trigger job too. It shoots 210 ttsx into about 3/4". Very nice wood, and very smooth action. Mounted a VX3 4.5-14 with leupold DD mounts. Check it out!

I wanted a supergrade in .338, but the sporter was in stock, so I took it home.

My gun is one of the new m70's and I have not done any load develpment yet. However I have taken 6 shots with 200gr SuperX factory ammo. The 1st two shots were at a rock (not huge but not small) at about 300 yards and hit both times. The 4 shots I took on paper grouped well under 1", I'd estimate .75 at 100yrds.

Too soon for a final judgement on the rifle, but I'm pretty damn excited to start some real load dev. Buy the Supergrade, or the sporter if it's in stock, and I'm sure you'll be happy.

I like the 225g Nosler Partitions in mine. I have only recovered one. It was from a bull elk facing straight on at about 100 yards. I have put those bullets through both shoulders of a big bull moose and through the lungs of deer. They work perfectly.
